The prevalent student opinion on professors and academics seems to be that “it all depends.” While some professors are knowledgeable and helpful, others would rather not be bothered with their teaching duties. An abundance of graduate students and foreign professors with a less than ideal grasp of the English language, especially in the science and math departments, also registers as a major complaint. Still, most agree that someone, be it a professor, graduate student, or teaching assistant, will be there should you seek their help. The key word here is “seek;” how involved your teachers are hinges upon your efforts to talk to them about your concerns. Binghamton’s academics are highly regarded, and the faculty includes professors who are among the best in their respective fields. However, this does not always translate to a great classroom experience. There are many great professors lurking the halls of Binghamton, but finding one can be hit or miss.

I love Binghamton. I am a middle-class kid who could not afford the private schools but also could not get financial aid. There are many intelligent people here who were in the same position as me. Binghamton is an up-and-coming school because of this!

It depends on what you take. Some of the classes required for a major are taught by the oldest, most boring teachers on the least important, most boring subjects, but that will be the same wherever you go. I have taken some great classes with very intelligent teachers and retained all sorts of information I never realized I’d like. |

Students must take the initiative, because quite honestly, there are too many of us and too few of them. However, professors that you do get to know personally can be very nice and helpful. Whether classes are interesting or not is just a personal preference. Being a science major, I found some of the science classes interesting and others a total waste of my time. |

It depends on what department you are in. Personally, I am in the School of Management; we’re supposed to have the best faculty, but it’s not really the case. I’ll be honest with you—Binghamton doesn’t have the best faculty out there. There are few very good professors and several average, so-so professors who are just there to get their work done. |

Professors are just as jaded and dispirited as the students. They seem to consider their teaching duties a distant second to their research. There are some good ones, don’t get me wrong, but I have found that most of them don’t respect the students. |
