Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Binghamton is by no means a big sports school. Though plenty of competitive athletic teams exist, the majority of the student body is indifferent to athletics, attendance is low, and school spirit suffers due to the lack of a football team. Athletics are, like so many other things at Binghamton, there for those who want to participate, but hardly a major influence on campus.

On the plus side, things are looking up. As several teams have started finding success at the Division I level, the popularity of the programs have increased. Men’s and women’s basketball are beginning to draw large crowds for home games and play high-profile, nationally-ranked teams, while a move to the new Events Center should draw in even more fans. Furthermore, intramurals are very popular at Binghamton, and competitive and non-competitive leagues offer people of all skill levels the chance to participate.

No Big Sports

There isn't a big athletics scene. Many people are involved in different forms of club sports, but clubs sports like volleyball or field hockey can be competitive to join. Others like swimming don't require previous team memberships. The D1 sports aren't popular. There aren't big turn outs at soccer games and there is no football team.

What Sport?

Binghamton isn't known for their spunk towards the sports life. Yes there are several intramural teams and sports clubs that people join but as far as competing, binghamton is by far the farthest away from becoming a contender for a championship

Binghamton Bearcats

Our campus pretty much revolves around our basketball team, the Bearcats. Soccer is our homecoming game, but very few besides the international students really care. I wish we had a football team. In America, that's what puts a college on the nation's radar.

School Spirit

Binghamton does not have a lot of school spirit. There is more respect for the sports teams because the school is Division I now, but without a football team, the spirit will only grow so much. However, the campus really blossoms during the spring. When the snow melts and sun comes out from hibernation, everyone’s spirits pick up, and students start feeling better about their school. And, of course, the seniors are all brimming with school spirit, especially during Spring Fling.
