College Prowler Take

Binghamton is by no means a big sports school. Though plenty of competitive athletic teams exist, the majority of the student body is indifferent to athletics, attendance is low, and school spirit suffers due to the lack of a football team. Athletics are, like so many other things at Binghamton, there for those who want to participate, but hardly a major influence on campus.

On the plus side, things are looking up. As several teams have started finding success at the Division I level, the popularity of the programs have increased. Men’s and women’s basketball are beginning to draw large crowds for home games and play high-profile, nationally-ranked teams, while a move to the new Events Center should draw in even more fans. Furthermore, intramurals are very popular at Binghamton, and competitive and non-competitive leagues offer people of all skill levels the chance to participate.

Varsity sports are semi-popular. A lot of people go to basketball and soccer games when the weather is good. People are not huge fanatics about the teams, though.

Sports at Binghamton University...

Sports at Binghamton University are pretty big. We are a Division I school, so we take sports pretty seriously. Many students enjoy going to the soccer, basketball, lacrosse, and baseball games for entertainment. The tickets are free for undergrad students. The gym facilities are great as well. We have a great weight room along with personal trainers. Intramural sports are also fun. There are variety of them, and it's a great way to meet new people and play sports that you love.

We just went Division I, so varsity is becoming a bigger deal. Some of our teams are good, and they’re fun to support, because we’re still underdogs but we have some talent. Yes, many of your tuition dollars will go toward the scholarships of Hungarian swimmers and Scottish soccer gurus, but we’re not Notre Dame. No football team, which is okay by me. As far as Intramurals, we have everything from touch football to fencing, and there is lots of participation.

Even though we’re up there in Division I now, unfortunately not many non-athlete students show all that much support. We have home games, but attendance is poor. You can get involved with intramurals and club sports no problem. They are just for fun, although some people tend to get a little competitive at times. The dance team, cheer team, and kick line are always looking for new people to try out.
