College Prowler Take
Although you can usually find an open computer at one of Binghamton’s many pods and the 24-hour computer lab makes it possible to work straight through the night, students unanimously agree that, can you afford it, having your own computer is the way to go. The convenience of high-speed networking, e-mail, and Instant Messenger from the comfort of your own dorm room is just too good to pass up. When it is working, Binghamton’s Ethernet connection for personal computers is among the fastest available. Unfortunately, the connection has grown more unreliable in recent years, in part due to an increase in personal computers on campus and increased downloading. Despite this, most students would rather work from their own computer than brave the occasional crowds of the computer pods. Of course, if money is a problem and a personal computer is an impossibility, the pods are convenient and available to all.

The pods are usually full, but not especially overcrowded. Perhaps you will wait five minutes or so for a computer, but not much more. During certain times, such as finals and midterms, they are more crowded, of course, but definitely manageable. For the most part, I have not had that much trouble with our network. Every once in a while, it goes down, and we are sure to complain about it, but it always goes back on eventually, and the campus network is fast. |

The network is often very slow, but rarely unreliable. I would have to advise bringing a computer. While printing in the labs is often a chore, one can manage without a printer, but having to type out a lengthy paper in a public lab might be a memorable experience. |

Generally, you should get a computer because it’s easier than going to a lab. If you don’t have one, though, there are always open computers in the labs, and there are a ton of labs on campus open to students. |

Everyone is connected to the Internet as long as your computer has an Ethernet card installed. You don’t need to bring your own computer; it’s strictly for convenience purposes. We have three computer pods on campus, and the campus is not so big that you wouldn’t be able to get to any of them from wherever you’re living. The largest pod we have is in the engineering building. There are lots of computers, and everyone gets 75 free printouts a week. You can put your stuff on disk and print out your pages as long as you have your Binghamton e-mail address and password. My first semester freshman year, I did not have a computer, but everyone else did. It wasn’t a problem sharing my roommate’s computer, but after a while, I just wanted my own. Now I have my own and I’m very happy. |

I think everyone should bring their own computer to college for the convenience, no matter what the facilities are like, but my friends that didn’t have them always were able to find a free pod when they needed it. There are some that are open all night, so that’s not a problem. |
