College Prowler Take

Binghamton—diverse on paper, not in practice. While there is an organization for just about every represented ethnicity or religious group on campus, students complain that there is little interaction between these groups. Others complain that meeting a student from outside New York State is on par with finding life from another planet, further detracting from the school’s diversity.

Still, it is safe to say that while whites remain the majority on campus and the Asian and Jewish organizations have strong numbers, you can find a home at Binghamton no matter what group you choose to associate with. And should you be unable to, you can always start an organization of your own.

BU has a very diverse campus. I have met and made friends with people from a wide variety of ethnicities and religions. While the majority of people I have met are from New York City and Long Island, they all have different backgrounds and unique stories.

The campus is diverse economically, ethnically, ideologically, and sexually. There is a high percentage of Jewish people on campus, and a higher percentage of white people. However, there are many races and many ethnic organizations to join that allow for everyone feel like they fit in.

We have every student union that you could possibly think of. We especially have a lot of Jewish students on campus. Perhaps being Jewish, I notice that, but I think if you ask anyone, they will tell you that the Jewish students make up a large portion of the school.

I think it’s very diverse. There’s a significant Jewish population, but there’s really a bit of everything. It seems as though every single ethnic group has some kind of representation, and there are ways to get involved in groups with people of your culture if you choose.

Facts

Economic Status

Binghamton is home to people from a wide economic spectrum. While there are plenty whose parents promised to buy them cars in exchange for the low tuition of a state school, there are just as many who are paying their own way through college.

Gay Pride

The gay community on campus is small and relatively quiet. The Safe Zone program insures tolerance by peers, faculty, and administrators.

Minority Clubs

Binghamton has a club for nearly every minority represented on campus, including many high profile fraternities and sororities. A few examples are the African Students Organization, the Haitian Student Association, the Latin American Student Union, and the Sikh Students Association.

Most Common Religions

Christian and Jewish groups are the largest. Services for several denominations take place just off campus at the Newman House.

Political Activity

The student body is predominantly made up of Democrats, and there are several outlets for politically active people, including a liberal and a conservative magazine. Still, many people complain that Binghamton is, for the most part, politically inert.
