College Prowler Take
Like many things in Binghamton, the phrase “it’s there if you want it” seems to be the best description of Greek life on campus. Most importantly, the Greek scene is not limiting. Participating in it will not prevent you from meeting people outside of your organization, and choosing not to pledge will not ruin your social life. With no on-campus fraternity or sorority houses, the Greek presence at school is not highly visible. Many freshmen attend frat parties, partly because they cannot get in to other places. By junior and senior years, most people have outgrown these parties and the party scene, andeven for those in fraternities and sororities, there is a shift towards the bars downtown. Many people choose to participate in Greek life because it is a unique college experience and a chance to make many new friends, but it is by no means the only way to meet these goals at Binghamton.

Greek life is pretty prominent on campus, but I wouldn’t go as far to say overpowering. If you want to get involved, you should have no problem. There are also a lot of frat parties, which are fun, but the majority of people in attendance are freshmen, the brothers, and friends of the frat. Usually, frats have a party that they are known for each year, and if you really like that particular party, then you might show up at it again in your sophomore and junior years, but upperclassmen are usually found at the bars and clubs. |

Greek life is like a sideshow that happens off campus, because there are no frat houses near campus. The bars play a much bigger role in campus socializing than the frat houses. If you’re looking for an Animal House experience, Binghamton is the wrong school. |

There are frats and sororities, but you can avoid them easily enough. They tend to stick to specific bars, dorms, and even classes, so if you’re into it, you got it. If not, you can avoid it. |

We have lots of sororities and fraternities, but not an overwhelming amount, just enough to have a party every weekend. The frat houses are off campus, so there are really no worries about them dominating. |

Frats have a lot of parties for freshman girls and older guys, but you don’t have to be Greek at Binghamton to have a life. Hazing can get pretty rough. |
