College Prowler Take
Perhaps not surprisingly, students that move off campus prefer to live close to the nightlife. The amazingly cheap cost of rent and ease of getting around town, even without a car, makes the move easy. As a result, student housing dominates many blocks around downtown Binghamton, with some areas maintaining an on-campus feel with the added privacy of off-campus living. While all the benefits of off-campus living in Binghamton may make you want to sign a lease as soon as possible, most students do not make the move until junior or senior year. Living in a privately-owned house or apartment is just that—private. It is often harder to meet new people and easier to remove yourself from the campus scene when you live off campus. Still, making that move eventually will be a worthwhile experience.

Off Campus Is the Way to Go for Upperclassmen
A-
It's very cheap to find housing in Binghamton. A lot of students end up moving downtown to be closer to the nightlife so there are a lot of houses that open up each year. University Plaza is is closer to campus and only takes students so it's essentially an upperclassman dorm without RAs.

Move off ASAP. It’s fun! Just be informed before you sign a lease. Go to OCC and ask lots of questions. Some landlords will totally take advantage of students. Live near downtown so you can walk to the bars. |

Off-campus housing is very convenient. After sophomore year, I would recommend moving off; the rents are only around $200 per month. The further away from campus you go, the better the housing seems. The buses suck, though. |

If you do decide to look for housing off campus, you’re in good hands. OCC (Off Campus College) will help you out with that, and upperclassmen are always willing to help. There are always flyers up that say things like ‘sixth housemate wanted’ and things like that. Be advised that the houses are not usually within walking distance, but they are on the free campus bus route. |

The off-campus housing is pretty convenient. It is mainly in the city of Binghamton, basically a 10- or 20-minute drive away. Some parts of the city are not nice, though, so you have to be careful when looking for a house. |
