College Prowler Take
BSC recently downgraded from NCAA Division I to Division III, which means athletics at Southern are a work in progress. Similarly, since the Panthers are the newest members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, there are limited opportunities to play nationally-known teams. The newest addition to the athletic department, the football program, has been dormant since 1939 and many people are excited to see how the brand new team fares in the new division. While sports are not the most prominent thing on campus, there are a few die-hard groupies that you will see at almost every game. At basketball games, guys with their shirts off gather in the “Panther Pit” to hassle the other teams during free throws. The athletic department does a great job of promoting games in order to entice more students to attend. Admission is already free, but sometimes they offer free food or prizes to try to boost the crowd numbers for big games. Once inside the arena, however, it’s clear that Panther pride outrivals the guest team’s every time.
Intramural sports are almost as big as varsity sports at BSC. It’s so easy to get involved with them that the majority of students play on an IM team at least once during their time at Southern. There are heavy rivalries between the Greek teams, and there are usually a fair number of independent teams to spice up the mix even more. BSC students tend to be active, whether or not it is on the varsity level.

Since the school switched to DIII, fewer people go to the games. That being said, it seems like most teams have a loyal, although small, following. Intramural sports are both fun and well-organized—they are a great way to destress and get some exercise.

Men’s basketball is by far our biggest sport. People come from all over to watch basketball and baseball. IM sports are mostly played by Greek organizations; however, you can find some independent teams. |

Varsity sports are only semi-important, and most people only keep up with them when we are winning. IM sports tend to be popular and good exercise, since they are played all year round. Usually, each fraternity or sorority has a team, and then there are a couple independent teams. |

IM sports are medium. They’re mainly Greek, and some fraternities and sororities really get into them while others just do it because they feel like they should want to participate. Soccer, baseball, and basketball are the big varsity sports on campus, and they all have faithful followings, but none of them are hugely popular with the entire student body. |

IM sports are quite the rage and a great way to run around playing games with your Greek family or independent friends. It’s a great option for everyone to be involved. Varsity soccer, basketball, and baseball are popular spectator sports that attract good crowds, and you often see your professors with their children attending the games. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Bill Battle Coliseum - Bill Battle is the location of all home basketball events and the strength training facilities for student athletes. Bill Battle is not the newest facility and is not open for use during non-game hours. However, there is always room for more spectators during any of the season’s sporting events.
- Larry D. Striplin Physical Fitness and Recreation Center - Striplin was completed in 1998 and is intended entirely for student use. It contains two basketball/volleyball courts, a suspended indoor running track, a combination weight and cardiovascular workout room, two racquetball courts, a swimming pool, and an aerobics room. It can be crowded during peak hours, but the facilities are well-kept and the exercise equipment is in great shape.
- Outdoor Tennis Courts - There are 12 lighted outdoor tennis courts which were completed in 2000 and are built into the ground for year-round use.
- Softball Complex - The softball complex houses two fields, clubhouses, and offices for softball use. It was also completed in 2000.

Getting Tickets
All regular season athletic events are free to BSC faculty, staff, and students by presenting an ID card. Tickets to special tournament events can be purchased by contacting the BSC athletic offices and are usually inexpensive.
Most Popular Sports
Basketball and baseball are probably the most attended sports. At certain important games, they will offer free pizza and T-shirts to entice people to attend.
Most Overlooked Teams
Most sports at BSC other than basketball and baseball don’t get much crowd attendance simply because the school is in a small conference and trying to make a name for itself in the NCAA. But this just means that if you’re an avid sports follower, you will always have a good seat.
Best Place to Take a Walk
There is a track that runs around the soccer field that is always open for running and walking, as well as the indoor track located in the Striplin Fitness Center. For outdoor nature walking, students can take a walk down to the Ecoscape.
