College Prowler Take

The best thing about the computers at Birmingham-Southern is that the majority of them are brand new. Although the IT staff does not have a very visible presence on campus, because their office is located in the basement (or the dungeon, some say) of the Harbert building, they are quick to respond to e-mails through their Helpdesk Web site (helpdesk.bsc.edu). When new students arrive on campus, each computer is whisked away for a 24-hour period so that they can configure them to work with the network properly. If your computer situation changes during the year, they are willing to reconfigure your new setup as well. They also equip each computer with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, and periodically send out e-mails informing students and faculty of any known computer viruses or threats that they should be aware of. If you’re prone to be a late-night studier, then the in-dorm labs will be a convenient option for you. All of the dorms are equipped with computer labs and printers. Sometimes the printers are on the fritz or are out of paper, but usually within a day or so, they are in working shape again. While having your own personal computer may be easy, there is certainly not a lack of accessible computers on campus.

I would recommend bringing your own computer, even though there are a lot of available ones on campus. It’s just easier with your own. You never know when a lab is going to be full, when a school printer might be broken, or when a computer may be out of order. Sometimes, you would just rather sit in your underwear in your own room and work instead of walking to a computer lab. I didn’t have any problems with the network my first year, but as changes are being made and the network was updated, lots of people have trouble.

I do not have a computer of my own, and I have never had trouble finding a computer to use on campus. Most people do have one of their own; however, it is not a necessity.

Bringing your own computer is...

Bringing your own computer is always a good idea, but it’s not necessary. Every dorm has a computer lab, and every building on campus has a computer lab. If one is crowded, you can usually find another one that isn’t. I would say the majority of BSC students do bring a personal computer for their dorm room, but sometimes you just can’t study there. Like any computer system, it does have its flaws; however, the computer maintenance team is very helpful if you call with a problem. They can help you to solve anything that may be wrong with your Internet or the computer itself.

One thing I have taken advantage of is the computer labs in our math building, which are open 24 hours a day, and which have free printing. That’s definitely a feature I have enjoyed, though I have found that most people still bring their own computers for personal use.

Student Internet access has been outsourced to Apogee Telecom, and the results have been mixed. It’s helpful (though not necessary) to have your own computer, as the computer labs can fill up close to mid-terms and finals.
