College Prowler Take
From the time you enter the gates until the time you leave, you can feel the presence of security on campus. Each student or faculty member gets signaled in with a friendly wave, and all other guests get registered at the guard shack. There are also blue-light stations with emergency phones that are located all over in times of need. Campus Police cars regularly patrol the premises, and they are always glad to give someone a ride to anywhere they need to be. For each dorm, there is an access code which is required to get into all of the outside doors. Students are told not to give this code to anyone else, and it changes monthly for even more security. Several times throughout the year, the Campus Police sends out an e-mail with security tips on how to keep your belongings safe.
Once outside the gates, the neighborhood can be pretty sketchy, so most students tend to avoid it if at all possible. Although there have been several service projects and rejuvenation efforts by both the school and the city of Birmingham, the surrounding neighborhoods remain one of the higher crime areas in the county. Security recommends not traveling alone at night, especially on foot, and they are always on call in case of an emergency. With 18 full-time officers, security seems to be a high priority on campus, and most students feel safe in the somewhat questionable neighborhood.

BSC has officers on campus 24/7 to provide security, and they’re great. They’ll drive students from their cars to their rooms at night. They have car safety inspections before breaks so that students can make sure everything is okay with their car before driving home. They are very friendly and often get to know the students. They’ll pick up students who have car trouble off campus. They’ll even feed students’ fish over the breaks. |

The Campus Police will do almost anything for you, and they will feed your fish while you’re away, or even drive to Atlanta to get you if your car breaks down. I have asked them several times to jump-start my car. Visitors should be prepared to be stopped by Campus Police before entering the gates. We do have occasional crimes, but overall, campus is pretty safe. I almost never lock my doors and feel perfectly safe walking around campus in the middle of the night. If you’d rather not be walking alone at night, Campus Police will be more than happy to give you a ride. |

Even though it’s pretty ghetto around the area, I still feel safe around campus. Off campus? Not always. Our Campus Police keep things on lockdown, though. One time, I was driving with this person and her battery died, and we called campus security and they were there right away. It was awesome. |

The campus is safer than anywhere else. I feel comfortable going for a run at midnight, or calling one of the security guards to unlock my room when I’ve lost my key. |

Security and safety are very well...
Security and safety are very well managed at BSC. We have our own security on campus that makes regular rounds, and because it is a smaller campus, keeping a watch isn’t as hard as it would be at the larger campuses. The Campus Police are available any time, day or night, for any reason. Do you have a flat tire on the interstate? Campus security will come to you and change it for you, and yes, I am speaking from experience. The staff is very friendly, and they will help with anything that they can. They are there to make your college experience fun and free of worry. |
