Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While most colleges located in urban areas can pride themselves on their public transportation, Birmingham-Southern cannot. There are means of public transportation available, but given the location of the school, it is far more feasible for students to drive themselves or at least make friends with students who have cars. Buses drive by the school several times a day, but they are usually on their way to parts of town that students do not generally frequent. Similarly, there are very few students who make use of cabs, unless they’ve gone out and had too much to drink. If it is entirely necessary for a student to use local transportation, the best place to get information about it would be on the Internet. Also, the campus is so small and inclusive that almost everything you need can be found on campus. If there is ever a time when a student needs to be taken somewhere on campus, however, the Campus Police will come like knights in shining armor and escort them to wherever they need to go. Also, it is not uncommon to hitch a ride with someone who might be headed to the other side of campus. Some adventurous students bring bicycles to get around, but the campus is constructed like a cross-country tour and lacks areas with sidewalks that are good for biking. The most common means of transportation around campus is by foot, and any other means are usually too complicated to deal with.

Great on Certain Days

There is a "Southern Shuttle" which runs on Wednesdays and Sundays to a shopping center not too far away with lots to do, and on certain Saturdays to the mall. But there is no on campus transport since it is so small, and there is no other off campus transport.

Walk Within the Bubble.

Southern's campus is small enough that there is no need for on-campus transportation-- dorms are close enough to academic buildings that anything other than walking is an inconvenience. Lazy Hilltop Apartment dwellers may be caught driving to classes early in the morning, but for the most part students take to campus on-foot. Should you be one of the few to live off-campus, driving in is your responsibility, but be warned: should campus security see you leaving the gates intoxicated, they will not hesitate to prevent you from leaving campus.

I think you can get a pass or something for the city buses, but I think they mostly go to the downtown areas, which aren’t where college kids tend to hang out.
