College Prowler Take
If you’ve ever heard the phrase “it’s so hot you could fry an egg on the pavement,” then chances are you’ve heard someone talking about the weather in the South. Birmingham is no exception, because it gets its fair share of the Southern heat. Fortunately, this means that there is ample time to be involved with the outdoors or catch up on your tan before the weather gets too cold. By the time the heat does cool down, it’s nearly Thanksgiving, so most students are advised to bring lots of versatile clothes to make it through the fall. If you’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas, unfortunately, Birmingham is not the place to fulfill those dreams. It only snows once in a blue moon in the ‘Ham, and even if it does, it probably won’t stick to the ground. Also, if you’ve never experienced a hurricane, one or two of them may become a part of your college experience. Chalk it up to the semi-tropical climate and our proximity to the Gulf of Mexico.
Another very helpful item of clothing to bring would be a raincoat, seeing as it rains fairly often in Birmingham. Also, Southern is located on the ‘Hilltop,’ one of the highest peaks in the city, so there’s a fair amount of wind to deal with, as well. Sunny skies and cool breezes are the norm for BSC, which is usually a pleasant reprieve from the cold indoor climates of the classrooms.

Alabamians primarily experience two seasons—winter and summer—and summer is the longest. So, I have found shorts, skirts, and dresses to be the clothing articles I wear most. |

The weather is nice most of the time, but it can be very sporadic. It could be 50 degrees and rainy one day, then 80 degrees and sunny the next. You can never tell. So make sure you keep a jacket and some shorts at school, no matter the season. |

The weather in Birmingham is pretty typical of a Southern city. It starts out hot, then it gets cooler into fall, and then it’s cold in the winter but not unbearable. A good coat will do just fine. Then it warms up again, and you’re usually back in shorts by early spring. |

Birmingham is your typical Southern city. It’s hot during the summer and usually mild in the winter, with the occasional snowstorm. Any hint of snow will close down the entire city, though, so don’t worry too much about having to walk through snowstorms to class. |
