Barnard College Students Tell It Like It Is

Barnard has caught on to the fact that women love to shop.

Shopping for Classes ? Barnard students have a two-week window in which they may attend as many classes as they want before they finalize their schedule with their advisor, called 'shopping.'

But hopefully they also enjoy the intellectual company of a lot of other women.

'It's an all-girls school?what more can I say? And the guys at Columbia aren't that good-looking, to say the least.'

But what this small liberal arts school lacks in terms of the opposite sex, many students feel they more than make up for in areas like Barnard academics (which includes a partnership with Columbia) and the NYC locale and nightlife.

'New York is the best place to go to school. It's full of really incredible opportunities and experiences. Some of the best theater, shopping, and dining in the world are only a subway ride away. The University offers some really great deals, and a lot of classes on campus take advantage of the fabulous cityscape by arranging field trips to the Met, Central Park, or the theater. It can get kind of expensive, but if you know where to look, you can save a lot of money.'

'It's not every day that you can find a teacher who will invite the class over for coffee or take you out for lunch to discuss a paper, but, at Barnard, this is not an uncommon occurrence. Some of the greatest teachers I've ever had have been at Barnard, not only because they are very fluent in their fields, but also because they are here because they love teaching.'

'From what I have experienced, there are not too many parties on campus in comparison to other party schools. However, there are parties in the college bars around campus. And, of course, you're in NYC, so any club or lounge will always offer some sort of entertainment.'

Find out if Barnard truly has something for you, straight from the students' mouths.

Visiting campus isn't enough.

The College Prowler Process

While writing our series of college guides, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university. By hiring current students as authors, we strive to create college guides that truly represent each campus. Our guides cover both the good and the bad, and whether survey responses point to recurring trends or varying opinions, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides.

From the very beginning, student writers gather the most up-to-date stats, facts, and inside information on their colleges. They fill each section with student quotes and summarize the findings in editorial reviews. In addition, each school receives a collection of letter grades (A through F) that reflect student opinion. Once a guide is written, additional college students serve as editors and check for accuracy even more extensively. This same process is applied to all of the 258 colleges and universities College Prowler currently covers. Each guide is the result of endless student contributions, hundreds of pages of research and writing, and countless hours of hard work. All of this has led to the creation of a student information network that stretches across the nation. It’s no easy accomplishment, but it’s the reason that our guides are such a great resource.
