Lewis & Clark College Students Tell It Like It Is

Want to follow in the footsteps of Monica Lewinski? Well, maybe not her exact footsteps, but her Lewis & Clark education did get her an internship at the White House!

Somewhere along the timeline of Lewis & Clark College's history, the school got a reputation 'as a mecca for pot-smoking hippies.' But with average SAT scores between 1200?1360, Lewis and Clark is hardly a school for someone looking for an easy ride.

'The teachers encourage discussion, and when you realize that your classmates know what they're talking about, it's kind of intimidating. However, it motivates you to study harder so that you can sound smart in class, too.'

Students at Lewis & Clark are also not limited to only the classes offered on campus. Many are drawn to Lewis & Clark because of its international emphasis. Language programs are strong, and there are numerous opportunities to study abroad. More than half of Lewis and Clark students study abroad at some point during their college career.

But while you are in Portland, make sure to get yourself into town for some good grub.

'Portland has hundreds of great restaurants. The diversity of ethnic food here is amazing. My favorites are Typhoon! (Thai), Asmara (Ethiopian), Pho Hung (Vietnamese), The Delta Café (soul food), Laughing Planet (organic fare), the Tao of Tea (Chinese), and Pastini (Italian). Plus, coffeehouses, like Rimsky-Korsakoffee, are everywhere!'

But remember to wear a rain jacket!

'I've finally come to the conclusion that rain is an integral part of the Lewis & Clark experience. I've actually grown to love the rain. I swear, it's very cozy and provides either a good studying atmosphere or a romantic one. It's usually a very light mist, but I won't lie to you, it is pretty continual for most of the school year.'

But in April, you'll notice students not so concerned with protecting themselves from the elements. (It's called the Naked Mile, and you don't want to miss it.)

The College Prowler Process

While writing our series of college guides, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university. By hiring current students as authors, we strive to create college guides that truly represent each campus. Our guides cover both the good and the bad, and whether survey responses point to recurring trends or varying opinions, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides.

From the very beginning, student writers gather the most up-to-date stats, facts, and inside information on their colleges. They fill each section with student quotes and summarize the findings in editorial reviews. In addition, each school receives a collection of letter grades (A through F) that reflect student opinion. Once a guide is written, additional college students serve as editors and check for accuracy even more extensively. This same process is applied to all of the 258 colleges and universities College Prowler currently covers. Each guide is the result of endless student contributions, hundreds of pages of research and writing, and countless hours of hard work. All of this has led to the creation of a student information network that stretches across the nation. It’s no easy accomplishment, but it’s the reason that our guides are such a great resource.
