University of Massachusetts Students Tell It Like It Is

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming to UMass

  • Lost or stolen dorm room keys cost $160 dollars to replace.
  • If you are unable to register for a course online or via telephone, approach the professor and ask to be admitted.
  • Fake IDs do not work well here.
  • Buying anything but the most basic meal plan is a waste.
  • Time management.
  • Just because you need a course doesn't mean you'll get it.
College Prowler's University of Massachusetts guidebook has everything that current students think you need to know before you make your college decision?information that they have decided to report to future students, off-the-record, and without any influence from the university?just real student opinions, facts, and tips on how to survive at UMass.

You can hear everything they have to say, in their words, in the 'Students Speak Out' sections found in 20 of the book's 29 chapters, for hundreds of quotes on the types of guys and girls found on campus ('You'll find your ghetto folk, your rich brats, your hippies, and your nerds. The diversity on this campus is one of its high points.'), the nightlife ('Everyone knows that UMass parties are out of control.'), the campus housing ('The dorms are decent, but stay away from Sylvan. Southwest is my personal favorite, but only to visit. Sylvan is suite-style, so you're living with five or six other people. Southwest is a huge, concrete mess?the general rule of thumb is that you go to there to party, but not to live.'), and more.

The College Prowler guidebook gives you an insider's look at what it means to be a UMass student. There's more to a school than you can learn about in a brochure or a campus visit, so make sure you find out everything you can before you make your choice!

The College Prowler Process

While writing our series of college guides, we felt it was critical that our content was unbiased and unaffiliated with any college or university. By hiring current students as authors, we strive to create college guides that truly represent each campus. Our guides cover both the good and the bad, and whether survey responses point to recurring trends or varying opinions, these sentiments are directly and proportionally expressed through our guides.

From the very beginning, student writers gather the most up-to-date stats, facts, and inside information on their colleges. They fill each section with student quotes and summarize the findings in editorial reviews. In addition, each school receives a collection of letter grades (A through F) that reflect student opinion. Once a guide is written, additional college students serve as editors and check for accuracy even more extensively. This same process is applied to all of the 258 colleges and universities College Prowler currently covers. Each guide is the result of endless student contributions, hundreds of pages of research and writing, and countless hours of hard work. All of this has led to the creation of a student information network that stretches across the nation. It’s no easy accomplishment, but it’s the reason that our guides are such a great resource.
