Boston College maintains an efficient and up-to-date computer lab that is only marginally crowded during exams. Even when the labs are crowded or you have some kind of computer problem, the lab employees are generally very helpful. Despite the general accessibility of the labs, most students have their own computers. Since most students at BC frequently check their e-mail and use Instant Messenger, the convenience of having a personal computer can’t be beat. Certain majors, such as English or history, require much more writing than others where an individual computer might not be mandatory. So, it really depends on the classes you are taking and what you want to use your computer for.
The school also helps out students by offering the option to buy a computer through the College. If you do this, you will also be able to get your computer fixed free of charge if anything happens to it. The network may not be the fastest in the world, but the freedom offered by wireless connections is certainly a plus. The lab is a noteworthy resource, but most students agree that having a personal computer is preferable to relying on the Campus Technology Resource Center.
