I think "hook-up culture" is pretty pervasive at BC, but it's also not impossible to find people who want to be in a relationship. Several of my friends had serious relationships while at BC, but I would say probably more of them were less interested in relationships. I think there's a wide enough variety of people at BC that you could find what you're looking for, whether that's hooking up or building a relationship.

First of all, congrats on getting into two fairly selective schools. I'm a BC student, so I can't speak for Emory, but I'll try to answer your questions as best I can (at least about BC).

BC is a mixed bag, but there are a lot of preppy kids because the school draws an overwhelming amount of wealthy New England, NY and NJ students. Expect to see lots of Sperrys and button-downs in the fall and spring and Bean Boots and Patagonias in the winter.

BC is located in one of the most liberal areas of the country, and a lot of the professors tend to lean towards the left, as is common at most colleges. However, because a good portion of the students come from very wealthy backgrounds, it tends to be somewhere around 50-50. You'll fit in fine as a liberal.

The alumni network is extremely strong, particularly for business students. I'm not really sure about the theater program or how involved the alumni are in finding jobs for theater students, but in general BC's alumni are very helpful.

Good Luck!

How is the work load and are students friendly I'm on the quite side at first.

The work load can be a bit intense at times, for business and pre-med students in particular. However, if you worked hard enough in high school to get into BC, chances are you can handle the work with a bit of effort.

The students are generally friendly, but you'll definitely want to try and be more outgoing, especially in the first few weeks of freshman year when everyone is just trying to make friends.

Overall, Boston College is a remarkably attractive campus, although very homogenous. The girls are typically gorgeous (if by gorgeous, you mean blonde, thin, wealthy, and super smart). On the other hand, several students commented that BC guys, for whatever reason, are short and not very socially adept, though there are a few notable exceptions to this rule. Most students place a lot of emphasis on appearance, for better or for worse, so be prepared—this is not the kind of place where you walk around in ripped jeans and flip-flops or come to class still in your pajamas. In some ways it’s nice that everyone makes such an effort to look presentable, but it can also put pressure on you to look just as nice, even when you have an early class and stayed up all night finishing a paper.

The overall image for both sexes is a fairly preppy, Abercrombie & Fitch or J. Crew look, and most people on campus fit that description. There are people with other styles on campus, but they are few and far between. It might be a little overwhelming, for example, to walk around campus with a mohawk. Nobody would give you a hard time, but you might get some weird looks or become known as “the person with the mohawk” because you’d stand out so much. In short, you can dress or look however you want to, but you might be a little intimidated by how similar everyone else is.
