Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Freshmen and sophomores can have a hard time finding quality parties at BC. The BCPD cracks down pretty hard on underage drinking, so dorm parties don’t really happen. Once you’re 21, though, a new world can open up to you. Mary Ann’s is the local watering hole where everyone goes for a beer, and CitySide and Roggie’s come up as close contenders. Harvard Avenue is only a $10 cab ride or a cheap T ride away and boasts six or seven mediocre to fairly great bars for the average Joe.

Big spenders can hit up downtown, where a cab can cost you anywhere between 20 and 30 bucks. Definitely fill up the cab with all of your pals, so you can split the costs. Fanieul Hall has literally hundreds of great spots, but you probably won’t run into anyone you know other than the people you came with—which can be refreshing some nights! No matter what you are looking to do, you’ll be able to find it somewhere.

Not a Party School, but Still Lots of Fun

Since there are no frats/sororities at BC, there's not usually "one big party" but lots of medium sized parties. Finding where the party is tends to be a challenge for some, but it definitely helps to know people!!! Thursdays, nothing happens on campus because most students go to the bars, like Who's on First, Cantab, White Horse, etc. So you definitely need a fake ID. Mary Ann's is supposedly hard to get into and is mostly seniors. Some students go out multiple times during the week especially if bars/clubs are hosting events.

It definitely costs a lot of money to go out to the bars, between cab rides, bar tabs, and cover charges/tickets for events. So if you're a girl, find a guy to pay for your cab and don't pay for your own drinks! If you're a guy, start saving $$ now.

During the weekend, most fun parties happen off campus. Students usually pre game in their dorms or 8 mans. As a freshman, it's sooo important to have your "crew" of about 5 people.

Another thing I love about BC is that it's sooo close to Boston. It's so easy to take the T into Boston for dinner or shopping, especially Quincy market. And since it's a huge city, lots of bands/popular singers play shows in Boston throughout the year, which is fun and switches it up from the usual campus party scene.

While BC is definitely NOT a party school, a majority of the population DOES drink and enjoy partying. It's so easy to find alcohol whenever you want, but you will definitely encounter the people who are boring and limit the amount they drink because they have a test or whatever. Lame

If You Want It' It's There

I would say there are definitely enough parties to go to if you're looking for them. Most parties don't have cover charges (I've never been to one that did) so you won't go broke partying. We have a party registering system (someone 21 needs to register the party if there is alcohol obviously), where RA's wont break up the party until 2 AM (unless you're like burning the building down) so most underclassmen go to these parties with their friends.

Limitless Options

If you are 21 (if you have a good fake), the nightlife options are almost limitless. One of my favorite things about BC is the fact that there is a very good party scene on and around campus, with the mods, off-campus apartments, suites and dorms that all throw parties on the weekends (these parties become easier to find and get into the older you get and the more people you know), but there is also all of the nightlife that Boston has to offer (bars, clubs, sporting events and other shows, etc). There are also plenty of other colleges nearby whose parties are pretty easy to get into. Nightlife is definitely very exciting and abundant for BC students.

What is the party scene like on campus?

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

There are lots of clubs in Boston, and many of them are open to people 18 and over, making going to clubs one of the only kinds of nightlife freshmen can have.

Bar Prowler

There are tons of bars around campus and in Boston. For upperclassmen, these are the places to be pretty much every night of the week. Everyone has a personal favorite, but BC students agree that most of them are a really good time.

Organization Parties

There aren’t many organization parties on campus, although there are a few school-sponsored dances that often offer a bar to those who are 21+. If you are looking for some nightlife activities that don’t revolve around drinking, check out Boston College’s Nights on the Heights website (www.bcnights.org) for a listing of campus-sponsored events.

Mary Ann’s

Mary Ann’s is a college dive in the best sense of the word. All of the finances not wasted on decor or keeping the place clean are instead funneled into keeping the beer cheap, making Mary Ann’s not only the most popular BC hangout, but also the cheapest place around to get a drink.

A mix between a lounge, a dance bar, and a sports bar, Kinvara also regularly hosts darts and trivia competitions.

Wonderbar

Wonderbar is a trendy, upscale lounge and restaurant. It’s certainly more expensive than a lot of other local bars, but it’s a nice change of scenery from the more college-oriented establishments.

T’s Pub

T’s is more of a Boston University hangout than a BC one, which makes sense, given that it’s dead in the middle of BU’s west campus. It’s a typical college bar; it’s crowded, inexpensive, and offers a decent beer selection.

Big City

Big City is a bar and pool hall decked out to resemble a 1950s police station. The bar offers a very respectable beer selection, and pool is free from 6 p.m.–8 p.m.

The Avenue Bar & Grill

The Avenue is a bar and restaurant; it’s not too trendy and upscale, but the food, though good, can get expensive. The beer selection is considerable, with a few imports and microbews you’re not likely to find elsewhere.

Joshua Tree

This American restaurant/sports bar is a popular place for BC students to gather in the evenings. Whether you want to watch the big game with your friends, have some drinks, or dance the night away, Joshua Tree is the place for you. There is also pool and darts.

Great Scott’s

A popular college bar, Great Scott’s has a dance floor, though dancing isn’t as much the focus here as it is at some of Boston’s clubs. Wednesday nights, which are ladies’ nights, are big at Scott’s.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Go to the 18+ clubs or check out the Mods—you can usually just walk into a party. There are always a lot of off campus parties if you know where to look.
