Cheapest Place to Get a Drink
Mary Ann’s
College Prowler Take
Freshmen and sophomores can have a hard time finding quality parties at BC. The BCPD cracks down pretty hard on underage drinking, so dorm parties don’t really happen. Once you’re 21, though, a new world can open up to you. Mary Ann’s is the local watering hole where everyone goes for a beer, and CitySide and Roggie’s come up as close contenders. Harvard Avenue is only a $10 cab ride or a cheap T ride away and boasts six or seven mediocre to fairly great bars for the average Joe. Big spenders can hit up downtown, where a cab can cost you anywhere between 20 and 30 bucks. Definitely fill up the cab with all of your pals, so you can split the costs. Fanieul Hall has literally hundreds of great spots, but you probably won’t run into anyone you know other than the people you came with—which can be refreshing some nights! No matter what you are looking to do, you’ll be able to find it somewhere.

The parties on campus tend to be dorm parties, which easily become sweatboxes. However, there are a few good parties at BC several times a year.

Parties involve drinking lots of incredibly cheap vodka. If you don't drink, chances are you will feel uncomfortable. The bars nearby are cheap, and all the good places card.

Parties on campus are okay, but off-campus parties are great. The bar scene is pretty good around town, and if you venture into Boston, the bars are awesome.

The parties are the best off campus. The Mods are really fun, too, but kinda weird to go to if you don't know people. The social scene totally changes from year to year but is fun no matter what.

Bars and clubs are strictly for students 21+. There are lots of parties on campus, as well as in the off-campus housing where many juniors live. On campus, the best parties are in the Mods (senior housing). Also, there are several colleges in the area such as BU, Harvard, and Tufts, which all have pretty good parties.

FactsClub Crawler
There are lots of clubs in Boston, and many of them are open to people 18 and over, making going to clubs one of the only kinds of nightlife freshmen can have.
Bar Prowler
There are tons of bars around campus and in Boston. For upperclassmen, these are the places to be pretty much every night of the week. Everyone has a personal favorite, but BC students agree that most of them are a really good time.
Organization Parties
There aren’t many organization parties on campus, although there are a few school-sponsored dances that often offer a bar to those who are 21+. If you are looking for some nightlife activities that don’t revolve around drinking, check out Boston College’s Nights on the Heights website (www.bcnights.org) for a listing of campus-sponsored events.
Bar Listings
A mix between a lounge, a dance bar, and a sports bar, Kinvara also regularly hosts darts and trivia competitions.
A popular college bar, Great Scott’s has a dance floor, though dancing isn’t as much the focus here as it is at some of Boston’s clubs. Wednesday nights, which are ladies’ nights, are big at Scott’s. Great Scott’s 1222 Commonwealth Ave. Allston (617) 734-4502
Big City is a bar and pool hall decked out to resemble a 1950s police station. The bar offers a very respectable beer selection, and pool is free from 6 p.m.–8 p.m. Big City 138 Brighton Ave. Allston (617) 728-2020
Mary Ann’s is a college dive in the best sense of the word. All of the finances not wasted on decor or keeping the place clean are instead funneled into keeping the beer cheap, making Mary Ann’s not only the most popular BC hangout, but also the cheapest place around to get a drink. Mary Ann’s 1937 Beacon St. Boston
T’s is more of a Boston University hangout than a BC one, which makes sense, given that it’s dead in the middle of BU’s west campus. It’s a typical college bar; it’s crowded, inexpensive, and offers a decent beer selection. T’s Pub 973 Commonwealth Ave. Boston (617) 254-0807
The Avenue is a bar and restaurant; it’s not too trendy and upscale, but the food, though good, can get expensive. The beer selection is considerable, with a few imports and microbews you’re not likely to find elsewhere. The Avenue Bar & Grill 1249 Commonwealth Ave. Allston (617) 782-9508
This American restaurant/sports bar is a popular place for BC students to gather in the evenings. Whether you want to watch the big game with your friends, have some drinks, or dance the night away, Joshua Tree is the place for you. There is also pool and darts. Joshua Tree 1316 Commonwealth Ave. (617) 566-6699 (617) 566-6699
Wonderbar is a trendy, upscale lounge and restaurant. It’s certainly more expensive than a lot of other local bars, but it’s a nice change of scenery from the more college-oriented establishments. Wonderbar 186 Harvard Ave. Allston (617) 351-COOL
What to Do if You're Not 21
Go to the 18+ clubs or check out the Mods—you can usually just walk into a party. There are always a lot of off campus parties if you know where to look.
