Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The public transportation system consists of the T— Boston’s version of a subway—and the BC bus. The BC bus can go either to Newton or to Cleveland Circle, where restaurants, a few bars, and pharmacies are located. It can be quicker than the T, depending on where you are going. It also depends on the time of day.

The T will take you pretty much anywhere in Boston, but it is not the quickest subway ever invented. It can be a long day if you decide to take the T from BC to downtown, but for shorter rides at off-peak times, the T is the way to go. Most T fares are a couple dollars, and the T shuts down after 2 a.m. Still, while it is working, it’s the cheapest way to get around town. Cabs are common and convenient; after all, they just take you right to your door instead of having to wait at some bus or T stop. They can also be somewhat cheap if you and a whole bunch of friends cram into them, but try to use them only for nights out, and rely on the T during the day.

Transportation

Transportation in and around Boston College is extremely convenient. The school provides a free bus, known as the Commonwealth Ave. Bus, that will take one on a loop around campus and to the Reservoir T stop on the D line. From there, one can use the T to get most places. But if you need a different T line, both the B line and the C line are in walking distance from various stops on the Comm Ave bus.

Pros and Cons

The availability of transportation is phenomenal: the BC bus system around/off campus, the green line, shuttles to Logan and South Station on holidays. One of the only downfalls of BC is living on Newton, which requires taking the Newton bus to main campus on a daily basis. At times, it can be inconvenient, but if you plan ahead and are on time, it's fairly reliable. You get used to it eventually, and a heated bus is always better than a freezing walk to class from Upper.

The T

Public transportation can be kind of a pain around BC, but once you get used to it, it's fine. You can take the shuttle bus to the Reservoir stop on the D-line and that'll get you downtown in about 20 minutes. You can get pretty much anywhere in the city from there, actually. People complain about the bus, but it's not that bad. Also-- don't take the B-line unless you absolutely have to. It sucks.
