Best Things

  • The size of BU. The sheer size of the University allows for a huge selection of courses, from French Regional Wines to Nietzsche to Stalking the Wild Mind.
  • The professors.
  • Domino's Pizza takes BU Convenience Points.
  • Boston is a great college town, and the locals are highly entertaining; especially during Red Sox season.

Worst Things

  • The conservative administration is an ever-present source of distress for students.
  • The size of the University makes it difficult to get to know your professors. They will not come to you. You have to put in the effort.
  • BU, like any large university, has an impenetrable bureaucracy that becomes annoyingly problematic for individual students with individual issues.
  • The security on campus is reminiscent of your seventh grade bus driver if she were to suddenly develop a thick Boston accent. Don't swipe your card more than once in the wrong direction, or you are liable to get shut out.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

While BU certainly has its downfalls, most of which are due to the sheer size of the University, there are plenty of opportunities to take full advantage of all that it has to offer. For the resourceful and motivated, a little effort will go a long way. The most important thing is to utilize your professors to your advantage. It is their job to be available to their students, and while some are certainly more attentive than others, students are not turned away by a professor when they have gone looking for opportunities or support.

Keeping busy, being well-organized, and choosing a course of study that truly stimulates your intellectual interests will all be really helpful in having a successful experience at BU. Many students dread graduation day, and therefore, leaving Boston is not something they look forward to. On the flip-side, countless others would argue the opposite perspective. Accept your environment and work with it, as well as against it. Do not stay inside for too long, and do not drink away your college years. Make school a priority, and hang out with your professors (they are the best resource you have). Boston is a huge city with a really large population of young people. If you are looking for a taste of city life, and think that you would be able to establish yourself at a big university in a high-paced atmosphere, it is definitely possible to find your niche here.

It's an Option

Personally I just didn't have time to attend a lot of sports events while adjusting to BU. I know that the dog pound can be a fun and rowdy college experience for anyone that is into sports and the hockey and basketball games are a fun way to hang out with friends and be apart of the BU community.

Diversity at Boston University

Interesting Mix

Coming from California I am used to a ridiculous amount of diversity, from interracial mixes to diverse friend groups. However, coming to the east coast I noticed a lot more students more closely bound to their heritage. A lot of ethnic groups interact with other ethnicities but seem intent on finding and marrying someone from their own racial category. There is an abundance of international students which causes a diversity even within the international category. Some students are easy going and socialize with the natives so to speak while others stick to the people from their own country, at times even speaking a different language through an entire class. I know BU tries to counter racial cliques by housing assignments but also strives to make people comfortable while expanding students' social views.
