- It is extremely difficult to live in Boston without a fairly consistent source of funds. Unlike life in a small town, money is necessary for just about everything, and you really can’t do much without it, unless you prefer quiet evenings at home . . . a lot. Those who often find themselves without cash are doomed to suffer socially. Your best bet is to get a job, even if it doesn’t pay much, because a little money is better than none. When in doubt: the GSU Union Court is always hiring food service employees. You do not even have to apply if you are a BU student. The pay is minimal, but the hours are flexible, and easy to come by. Another option that is always guaranteed is the Shaw’s Market on Commonwealth Avenue. It is right on campus, and they do mass hiring every Tuesday. Just show up. Most students typically find themselves working at one of the two places listed above for at least a few weeks to earn some quick cash. The truth is that it is very difficult to find a “real” job in this city. Because of the high concentration of students, part-time work is not easy to come by, and to get a good job, with good pay, you really have to know someone. Your best bet is to try to find a job on campus. This will save you time, money, and effort traveling back and forth around the city. BU offers a really good service to help students find work (be it part-time, full-time, on campus or off). Check out the job board online at the Student Link at http://www.bu.edu/studentlink, or stop by the office on the second floor of 881 Commonwealth Avenue to get yourself oriented. BU has a service that allows people from the community to call in and place a request for a student employee. The job opportunities are updated daily and include childcare, tutoring and teaching, administrative, clerical, internships, non-profit work, retail, food service and catering, household labor, summer jobs, recreation, and more. Sometimes the high-paying jobs are the ones that are least conducive to your academic goals, however. Do yourself a favor and find an internship or a job that will provide you with some career experience.
