College Prowler Take
If you are a guy—especially (but not necessarily) if you have a glimmer of personality, intelligence, or looks—you are way ahead. There are girls to go around, and around again. The student body is notoriously described by those both on and off campus as shallow and materialistic. This is obviously not universally accurate, but BU certainly serves up its fair share of these sorts of individuals. The selection of suitable mates is certainly slim. If the good ones aren’t taken, they are usually gay. In fact, many girls here have relationships with people they met off campus (yet another benefit of city living). Finding people at such a huge university is easy; finding your niche, however, takes some time. Move around, get away from the University setting, and be open to friendships (romantic or otherwise), wherever they might occur.

There are 18,000 people, plus grad students at BU, and there is no way to sum them up. Some people are complete idiots whose fathers clearly paid their way in and there are brilliant students on financial aid.

The girls and guys on this campus...
The girls and guys on this campus are fashion-conscious, and many are sadly very materialistic. They have yet to learn that there is a difference between looking nice and being a walking billboard for the latest fashion brand. I wish people here were more down to earth.

The student body at BU is...
The student body at BU is interesting. The girls tend to be very pretty, very snobby, very slutty, and very rich. The guys tend to be very gay. There are definitely more girls on campus, but you won't notice it until you get involved in activities and realize that there are only girls participating. A high percentage of the guys are gay, which makes BU a rough place for love for the girls.

There are lots of girls, and way too few guys! Of course, it is very easy to hook up; it is college after all, and the boys are seemingly just going nuts. Suitable mates, on the other hand, are definitely more difficult to come by. The effects of the low population of males, as compared to females is felt, but it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of places to go to seek out members of the opposite sex. Just step outside. |
FactsBirth Control Available?
Yes - BU Student Health Services offers free condoms. In addition, there is a Planned Parenthood in West Campus on Commonwealth Avenue. PP offers gynecological exams, all forms of birth control (including free condoms), the emergency contraceptive pill (without an appointment), STD testing, abortion services, and family planning. Not only are all of the above available, but they are provided at an extremely low cost because they operate on a sliding scale and will take insurance. For more information, call Planned Parenthood at (617) 616-1600.
Social Scene
Surprisingly, there is a lot less interaction in classrooms and around campus. It is generally not the place to meet people. On any given day, students are usually clumped together, in prepackaged social circles. It is much easier to meet people off campus, and after academic hours.
Hookups or Relationships?
Freshman year is a sexual explosion. Hooking up is the only way most seem to go. After that, and especially once you start finding your scene, people tend to pair off, at least for a while. Many people date individuals they meet outside of campus life. By graduation, relationships either last or they don’t. Either way, expect drama. With all of the moving around and general dispersal of your social circle, it’s not easy to deal with a serious relationship after graduation.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
Out in Boston, around the town, and in the clubs—there are so many kids hanging out everywhere. If you can't find anyone, you are staying home way too often.
Dress Code
Most kids attending BU keep up with fashion, often to an obnoxious degree. Sitting along the sidewalk of Commonwealth Avenue can often feel like a model runway. As soon as the winter breaks, no matter what the temperature, the girls and guys on campus shed their layers, exposing their recent acquisitions from the French Connection, Prada, Gucci, D&G, Armani Exchange, and othe designers. A favorite activity: sit on Commonwealth Avenue, directly in front of a dip or crack in the cement (for good results, try the one to the left of the Tsai Center at the College of Arts and Sciences). Due to the fact that over half of the student body clip-clops around in high heels, this provides for an exciting afternoon. There is nothing better than watching some self-enraptured BU girl trip in heels and then pretend like nothing happened. Trust me.
Did You Know? Top Places to Find Hotties: 1. The Mugar Memorial Library
2. Any of the clubs downtown
3. Commonwealth Avenue (especially the steps of CAS)
4. The BU “beach”
5. If you like the alternative scene, check out the “Crack-slab” on Newbury Street—all sorts of kids hang out around there. Or head out to Copley Square and chill on the grass, where you are bound to get approached by a hottie or three.
