Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is no question, students feel safe on campus. Most even report feeling perfectly comfortable roaming the area alone at night. The overwhelming presence of campus security, however, does put a significant strain on student life in the dorms, so avoiding the larger on-campus housing options is universally suggested to decrease problems with the stringent guest policies and curfews adhered to at BU. Bay State Road and South Campus housing do not have security guards at the entrance, thereby allowing for more freedom.

To be honest, it is not that difficult to avoid interaction with campus security. The University is littered with blue-light phones, there is a 24-hour crisis hotline, and there’s an escort service for late-night traveling (which, by the way, is the best way to get from one end of campus to the other for free). There are almost always people out and about—even after the rest of the city shuts down.

Could Be Safer

The police do as much harm as good, stopping petty student crimes over the muggings, and rapes, and thefts that occur around campus.

Little to Worry About

On campus, and even off campus I have never felt uncomfortable or worried that I would be harmed or have something stolen. BUPD is always patrolling (particularly at night) to keep you safe, even though they can be a hassle about parties sometimes.
