Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With high-speed Internet connection in dorm rooms, libraries, classrooms, the student union, and just about everywhere else on campus, there will never be a place you can’t check your e-mail. There are even a couple computers in Smith Union and Thorne Hall for students to have quick access to the Internet at any moment. Despite the excellent availability of computers on campus, most students bring their own laptop, most likely to avoid trekking through campus in a couple feet of snow. Bowdoin has a computer purchasing plan with Apple and Dell, so computers are available for purchase at a bargain price.

Students appreciate the availability of computers, decent speed of wireless, the software that is available from IT, tech support, and unlimited printing. However, Bowdoin's technology weak link lies in the unreliability of the printing system. Students can set up their computers to print to any of the printers on campus, but the transaction often doesn't complete—much to the chagrin of students who walk all the way across campus to pick up a document—or the printers break down. There are printers in the libraries and computer labs, and when they break, it often takes a while for the problems to be fixed. While students do bring their own printers to Bowdoin, they rely heavily on the printing system to print assignments or articles for class reading. Despite this frustration, Bowdoin is a technologically friendly campus with a helpful IT staff that is always willing to sort out any technological issue.

Computers on Campus

Computers are good and all over campus, and the 24-hour lab is excellent for late-night/early-morning homework. The printing allocation makes printing practically free as long as you don't print fifty pages of stuff a week. WiFi is fast and reliable. Most people use personal laptops and labs stay fairly empty.

Easy for Freshman

While most of the schools computer labs and printers are very accessible on campus, their locations are most convenient for the freshman dorms on campus. Once it starts snowing, and you need to walk 15 minutes in order to print off a paper, printing becomes more of a dreaded task than a convenient one. So dreaded that my roomie and I purchased a printer right after classes started. That being said however, there are several smaller computer labs around campus that are not crowded and very homey when used. Not having a computer for 6 months forces you to search for such places.

Excellent

Computers are located all over campus in convenient locations. IT is readily available and very present. It is a rare occasion to come across a computer/printer that isn't working properly (except maybe out of paper!). The printing system works well and the allotted $60 per semester has been way more than enough for me.

Did You Know?

There are 14 public computer labs and spaces spread across campus, some of which are available 24 hours a day.

Most major software packages that are used in classes are available in the labs, so students shouldn't need to purchase the software, unless they want to. Each public lab space includes printers.
