College Prowler Take
Bowdoin does its best to provide the latest technology to the student body. With a high-speed Internet connection in dorm rooms, library study spaces, classrooms, the student union, and just about everywhere else on campus, there will never be a place you can’t check your e-mail. Although IT manages several big computer labs, most students recommend bringing either a laptop or desktop to campus for convenience and to avoid trekking through campus in two feet of snow. Bowdoin maintains a computer purchasing plan with both Apple and Dell so that computers are available for purchase at a bargain price. For a college located in rural Maine (where students need to go outside and walk in circles to get cell phone reception), you would never think to find such a technologically advanced school. The Bowdoin campus has been completely wireless since 2006. The biggest complaint from students about computers is in regard to the printers. There are printers in the libraries and computer labs, but when they break, it often takes a while for the problems to be fixed. It would be helpful if printers were installed in dorms and student unions. Many students bring their own printers to Bowdoin, but with the magnitude of documents that professors assign for their students to print out, students are forced to rely on campus computers and printers. Given this frustration, Bowdoin is a technologically friendly campus with a helpful IT staff that is always willing to sort out any technological issue.

Printing is free on campus, which is great, but we still have to pay for photocopying, which is annoying considering I often feel like I have to make photocopies for classes. Photocopying is not only expensive, but it is also a hassle to pay for and to get the older photocopiers to work. |

I brought my own computer. Everyone I’ve met brought a computer. Everyone I've met also brought a printer. Labs have printers, but when snow falls, people don’t really want to trek through snow to print a paper. |

My biggest complaint about the computers at Bowdoin is the lack of adequate printers. There are printers in every library, but they seem to break a lot, which is always frustrating when you need to print out a last-minute paper. Also, none of the dorms or even the Student Union has a printer, which makes printing that much more of a hassle. |

There are several computer labs in various places. Most of them are hooked up to printers, and I don’t think it’s too hard to get a hold of one. With that being said, a personal computer is very helpful for late-night studying if you live far from the computer labs. In any dorm room, there are always as many Internet ports as there are students living in the room. |

Our wireless network is really great because everywhere on campus is connected. Even out at the fields and in the tallest dorm, you can still get wireless! |
