Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although some hardcore drugs may be used on campus, it’s definitely kept private and hidden from mainstream campus life. Smoking cigarettes is not very common, but many students seem to almost brag about their drinking ability. However, partying at Bowdoin is relatively calm because it is primarily limited to the weekends—the rigorous academic schedule does not really allow otherwise.

Most students feel little pressure to join in drinking or use drugs. Bowdoin students respect the wishes of others and will not put them in situations in which they are not comfortable. If you are looking for a night of heavy alcohol consumption, it will be available, at least on Fridays and Saturdays. But if you aren't interested in drinking, there are usually other events going such as performances in Pickard Theater, movies at Frontier Café, or various lectures from visiting professors. Students at Bowdoin would never think of making anyone get involved in something that is not their thing—they will just hope you are having a good time doing whatever you plan on doing.

Drinking Is King

Our campus is drenched in alcohol, but not so hot on the drugs. People here seem to be more about weed than anything else I guess, and people who smoke weed don't seem to comprise a large amount of the student body (but I could just be talking to the wrong people...)

In any case, the social scene here revolves around drinking, but the college is very open and pretty much accepting of the fact that college life for some reason demands alcohol. As such, security and administration isn't that strict about alcohol, but they do have plenty of measures that ensure student safety, which seems to be a policy that works out.

There's not really a lot of pressure to drink (other people around you may drink, but they won't force you to or exclude you for not choosing to do so), but things can get a little weird socially freshman year if you decide to declare yourself chem-free for your living situation.

Minimal Drug Scene

The drug scene at Bowdoin is small. There is just too much other stuff to do, and people tend not to distract themselves with drugs

A Little Hard Core but Easy to Stay Away

There are some hard core parties with lots of drinking but if you don't want to drink it is easy to say no.

Did You Know? Underclass students are often told by their older peers that when security shows up at a party, they should set their drink down on any available surface so they don't get in trouble. Despite this laissez-faire attitude, the College does a pretty good job during orientation of educating freshmen about what levels of alcohol are life-threatening. Security is also responsible for taking students to the local hospital if they have consumed too much alcohol.
