College Prowler Take
Finding a blond, blue-eyed, hockey player with good grades, or a brunette, green-eyed soccer team captain with a neuroscience major will not be difficult at Bowdoin. The Bowdoin men might be some of the hottest at any college in Maine. If you think the South harbors the best-looking students, take a moment and look at the Bowdoin students before you rule out the North. Bowdoin is a very athletic school, and except for the few football players that need the weight to be competitive, most of the athletes at Bowdoin need to stay fit. Many suggest that Bowdoin looks like a modeling agency brought to life not only because of the attractive students but in how people can become too wrapped up in their images, their work-out schedules, and how they eat. A nationally read magazine ranked Bowdoin in the Top Five for best-looking guys. The girls at Bowdoin, however, get the shorter end of the stick when it comes to perception of attractiveness. The female population would not be considered unattractive, but the male consensus is that they’ve seen schools with better. The girls here don’t spend tons of energy in preparing their wardrobe and hair. Guys can get away with a lot and still look hot. The hooking-up scene at Bowdoin is popular. This campus is probably less sexually promiscuous because students here realize how hard it is to avoid someone who you’ve hooked up with. At Bowdoin, you’ll meet a very diverse student body with many points of view, interests, and hobbies. Students feel a certain sense of comfort here. They come to Bowdoin to learn, play, and get to know interesting people.

It’s a very ‘jock’ school in that there are a lot of student athletes. Once spring comes and people start to shed the heavy clothing, there is a good amount of hot people, but it’s no southern state school. |

Bowdoin is above average—not the best or the worst. |

Girls are pretty much generic here. Guys offer very little variety, but on the upside, overall they are all of an above average quality for guys. |

To be fair, Colby does have an anti-Bowdoin hockey chant consisting only of the words ‘Ugly chicks.’ I’d say that, for a school of this size, there’s plenty of hotness to go around. The entering first-year classes get hotter, honestly. Guys around here definitely look good. |

Guys are chilled out for the most part. You get some uptight preppy jerks and some stoner burnouts, but where won’t you find people like that? The girls are more preppy than alternative and usually not ugly but far from hot. There are a few hotties, though. |
FactsBirth Control Available?
Yes - You can get mostly anything at the Dudley Coe Health Center, and condoms are available in on-campus housing.
Social Scene
The social scene at Bowdoin is dictated by the athletes and a select few other organizations. The rest of campus tends to attend parties that these organizations throw because 60 percent of the student body is involved in sports on campus. Social houses also provide a possibility for parties and socializing. Although these parties are more appealing to freshmen and sophomores, there is generally at least one per weekend. Social houses have taken the place of what was once a fraternity system, and thus the pressure and mischievous behavior that once may have existed during the Golden Age of fraternities no longer exists at Bowdoin. Students are very accepting of each others' decision of whether to participate or abstain from drinking.A parent commented that the Bowdoin students are "reserved extroverts" in that once an established group of friends is created, they don't find the need to be outwardly social with others and can seem superficial. If you are a true extrovert to the end who wants to constantly make friends with people as energetic as you about living life that way, this campus might not be for you. This student body is very much about getting into a groove and not straying from it. However, at the same time, if you are a quiet introvert, this campus might also seem to have too much small talk and too many cliques. If you are the average college student who enjoys being a part of one core group but have many friendly faces you know, then the Bowdoin bubble will make you feel comfortable. Due to the size and intimacy of the campus, it does not take long before you start remembering people's faces, names, and distinguishing attributes (i.e. what sport they play, which prep school they attended, or the a cappella group they sing for). Prospective students and visitors comment on how friendly the student body is and how they'll say hi to you even if they've never met you before. Your interaction among your core group of friends will be intense. You'll spend most of your time around them. If you're an athlete, your teammates will be your core group during the season.
Hookups or Relationships?
Although there are many relationships around campus, the predominant college culture of random hookups is also present at Bowdoin. Dating on campus can be difficult since there aren't many places on campus to go where there will not be people you know staring at you or waving hello. Dating on campus can often boil down to dinner at Moulton and sitting in the booths or attending different campus parties together. However, there are numerous restaurants downtown that offer nice and classy possibilities for dates. The random-hookup scene on campus is well subscribed to, but students comment that, because of the small size of campus and familiarity with each other through campus involvement, it is hard to avoid people you hooked up with, and relations become awkward. If you know how to play this game well, you can manage to play it cool, but the consensus on campus is that the awkwardness is unavoidable.
Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls
The best place to meet the opposite sex would be in activities, intramurals, and groups that you like participating in. With just under 100 student organizations on campus, there should be some place for you to find people with similar interests. If you're really outgoing and don't mind strumming up conversation, busy areas on campus where you can meet people are the Student Union, the main floor of the HL Library, the gym, the mail center, and the dining halls. It's all about how proactive you want to be in meeting people around campus. Many first years use social houses to meet upperclassmen. An assortment of your fellow classmates will also tend to hang out in the social houses.
Dress Code
Students at Bowdoin tend to subscribe to the outdoorsy preppy look. There's a lot of North Face and EMS, and many students enjoy the presence of L.L. Bean only 20 minutes away. On the whole, students are very relaxed, and Bowdoin paraphernalia, from sweatpants and sweatshirts to Bowdoin flip-flops, are everywhere around campus. Although the student population used to be very preppy, that's no longer the case.
