College Prowler Take

Everybody knows everybody else at Bowdoin. When anyone who shouldn’t be on campus is there, it becomes obvious to students and Security alike. It’s a bit sad, but townies are easily identifiable. Campus Security keeps faculty, students, and administration alert of any suspicious behavior. The blue-light stations and yellow call boxes all over campus offer a sense of security and assurance. On the news, much is heard about rape, theft, and even murder on other campuses; but at Bowdoin occurrences like that are rare to nonexistent. Some areas of the Quad are darker than others, but with 23 certified officers on the security staff, not much slips by unnoticed. Security also offers the free Safe Ride service that provides students access to all parts of campus during all times of day. Although Safe Ride may have been created to stop any drunk driving incidents, it is also helpful on weeknights when students are studying late into the night and don’t want to walk home alone.

It’s safe to say that the majority of Bowdoin students feel safe. Female students feel safe traversing the campus during late-night hours simply because they have no reason to feel threatened. Everyone feels comfortable here, and although the buddy rule is suggested, most students do not feel the need to employ it if they want to go out at night by themselves to get some fresh air. If students voice concern, the security directors are more than willing to listen and do what they can to make appropriate changes.

Fortunately, I haven’t had any run-ins with security but, from what I’ve heard, they could do a much better job of arriving on time and giving people rides.
