College Prowler Take

Throughout the academic year at Bowdoin, you will experience an exquisite fall season with changing colors, warm days, cool evenings, and calm ocean air. Students either experience a winter season that lasts too long (if you haven’t found an appreciation for Northeastern snow and cold) or too short (if skiing, ice hockey, snow shoeing, snowboarding, and other winter sports satisfy your fancy). Usually with two months left, Bowdoin students experience an amazing change in climate. The snow melts, the quads turn green, the sun stays out later, and the temperature is warm. At the first sign of 40-degree weather, students put away the long johns and whip out the flip-flops and tank tops. The weather at Bowdoin is not as bad as land-locked Vermont because of its proximity to the ocean, which stabilizes the air temperature a little bit more.

Opinions on the Maine weather are diverse. Although some might say the winters in Maine can be painful and excruciating, the Bowdoin Outing Club does its best to offer exciting day and weekend trips to the local mountains for skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing to make the winters exciting. The weather here is great for anyone who enjoys the outdoors no matter the weather. Skiers especially love the long winters. For many, however, the lengthy winter and dreary, cold mud seasons can be hard to get through. Yet, despite the cold, Maine is beautiful in all seasons.

Even in the summer, expect to be wearing sweaters. Winter is severely cold, but everyone here has been able to cope with it and thrive. Bring warm, real clothes (no cheap nylon or polyester, except when going to parties), good socks and boots, gloves and hats, a lot of T-shirts, and a lot of silly as well as classy suits for themed events.

Maine weather is unbelievable. As a Mainer, I’ve lived through many frigid winters, muddy springs, bright and colorful autumns, and warm summers. The weather is unpredictable in Maine, so bring your snowmobile suits, sweaters, gloves, wool hats, and shorts. Don’t forget your thermal underwear. Yet you won’t need all that come spring. As it warms up, shed the layers and apply the sunscreen because you’ll need the protection after the long winter. You will want to pack a light long-sleeve shirt for those warm days and chilly nights late autumn/early spring Maine offers. Also, don’t forget waterproof boots for mud season and insulated boots for the winter! Just be prepared because, as they say, ‘If you don’t like the weather in Maine, just wait a minute.’

Like a cheap vodka, Maine weather is an acquired taste. But once you are around it so much, you get used to it. Remember, layers and thick clothes are your friends.

It is very cold in the winter, and spring comes too late. However, the autumn is very pretty.

Nice So Far!

B+

It's been lovely these first few months of college, but it's starting to turn cold. I expect it will be very cold during the day when we get from break, but right now as long as the sun's out you still need at least a light coat to be comfortable. Nights are really cold.
