College Prowler Take

Students at Brandeis usually find their classes to be interesting and challenging. The small class sizes, excluding introductory courses in subjects such as calculus or economics, allow for students to get to know their professors and to really get involved with the material. Most professors at Brandeis are good teachers who are very well versed in their subject matter, and they pride themselves on being available when students need them. There are numerous academic and research opportunities available to undergraduates, as well as graduates. Grad students and TAs do not usually teach classes except for the optional USEM (University Seminar) and the UWS (University Writing Seminar), which are only required for freshmen.

The small Brandeis student body and the professors' dedication allows for one-on-one contact outside of class to be expected. However, the students must take initiative to meet with their professors, or they will miss out on this great opportunity. Brandeis’ academic reputation continues to grow because of the great and caring faculty, which recently set up a special fund in order to secure the jobs of some of their own from layoffs.

The professors are pretty awesome, for the most part. They're always willing to meet with you and help you out. The workload is pretty ridiculous, though. It seems like every class expects you to be able to get through a hundred pages of reading a week or a class, and inevitably you'll have two or three papers all due around the same time. We're known as being a great school, and you definitely earn your degree here. You can't keep a good GPA and slack off, but a lot of kids put too much emphasis on grades. It isn't rare to see someone trying to argue a B+ up to an A because they don't want their GPA to drop below 4.0.

The academics are excellent. I am in the environmental studies department, and there is a lot of experiential education-as there is in many other departments. Classes are generally small—under 25—except intro courses, which can be as many as 100 students. Some classes are even less than 10 students.

The professors are great. I would recommend talking classes that interest you more than taking requirements. The workload is completely doable, it is just a matter of balancing time, just like at any college. Brandeis has an amazing religious studies department, so if that interests you at all, apply!

I chose Brandeis because of its reputation for social justice. I've had the opportunity to take a wide range of classes outside my major and have loved most of them. The professors are all fantastic, and I have developed close bonds with those in my department of interest.

I love classes at Brandeis. Most of my freshman classes are under twenty which is pretty unheard of. Also, most of the intro classes are under 100. I love my teachers and they are very happy to meet you outside of class to help you with any problems, or just to talk about life. Also, the pre-med department treats you as if it was your mother. They are constantly there to help you choose classes, see programs, take research opportunities, and keep you on track.
