Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students at Brandeis usually find their classes to be interesting and challenging. Most professors at Brandeis are good teachers who are very well versed in their subject matter, and they pride themselves on being available when students need them. There are numerous academic and research opportunities available to undergraduates, as well as graduates. Grad students and TAs do not usually teach classes, except for the optional USEM (University Seminar) and the UWS (University Writing Seminar), which are only required for freshmen. In addition to TAs and graduate assistants, Brandeis also has "Roosevelt Fellows." Roosevelt Fellows are exceptional undergraduate students who offer advice to their peers on which classes to enroll in.

Brandeis' peer tutoring service, BUGS, is also available for many different classes and offers an alternative to visiting TAs, grad students, or Roosevelt Fellows. For students who need extra help, the small Brandeis student body and the professors' dedication allows for one-on-one contact outside of class. However, the students must take initiative to meet with their professors.

Psychology

I am a Psychology major at Brandeis University. Most of the professors I have had have been wonderful. They are extremely qualified and have done very interesting research. The workload can be challenging, but is definitely doable. The curriculum is interesting and there are a diverse selection of courses.

An Amazing Education

Classes are mostly small-scale, with only the introductory classes to majors having typically more than 25 students in them. Most of the professors are always available for help, and I have consistently seen them exhibit a desire for their students to do well.

HSSP

The HSSP major is probably the most practical and applicable major offered at Brandeis (I did the BA program, not BS). I cannot say enough great things about the major and the faculty. In particular, Professors Altman, Stimell and Curi are truly top notch educators (especially if you're interested in health policy). Due in large part to my major, I had a job in the field 3 weeks after graduation and continue to hold that position. Unlike a hard science or humanities major, HSSP drew a variety of students, which made the overall experience that much better. Professor Altman and others at Heller really believe in the major and in developing students and it shows.
