College Prowler Take
Athletics may not be Brandeis’s selling point, but they are starting to rise to the point of respectability. In 2009, the women’s basketball team made its first appearance in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Tournament, and Tim Morehouse (Class of '00) won the Olympic silver medal in fencing. The lack of a football or hockey team puts the focus on the normally less-popular sports—squash has a pretty big following. and there was a huge uproar at the suggestion of shutting down the golf team for budgetary reasons. However, you will not find much in the way of athletic pride or support at Brandeis. While sports do exist, they are not much of a big deal and are not a main attraction of the school. South Street separates the mammoth Ford Athletic Complex from the main campus, but sometimes the metaphorical gap seems so much wider. Recently, Brandeis has made great strides in recruiting more and more talented athletes to play for their teams. As the teams continue to improve, so will the school spirit and the outlook on athletics and athleticism at Brandeis. If you are into sports, Brandeis offers a wide, if not well-publicized selection, including intramurals. So, if you’re a sports nut, don’t worry, you are sure to find something you enjoy, regardless of the rest of the campus.

Sports? Brandeis has sports?...
Sports? Brandeis has sports? Actually, our basketball teams are pretty good, and a lot of people get excited about them. But, I am not the best person to ask about university sports, as I've never been to a game. I know that a lot of people get involved in ultimate Frisbee, though.

We are a Division III school. We have some good sports teams, but no one really cares. There isn't much school spirit because people are so down about the lacking social scene and unattractive students. Intramural sports are fun.

The most successful varsity sport...
The most successful varsity sport at Brandeis is fencing, which says a lot about the University itself. Although both men's and women's basketball are getting better, the games aren't usually crowded. Some people play IM sports, and club sports like crew are enjoyed. But, overall, it is not a very athletic campus. People would rather go to an a capella concert than a baseball game, and most of the athletes aren't very smart.

Varsity sports on campus are a lot...
Varsity sports on campus are a lot of fun. They are not in any way the center of social life on campus, but it is a great way to get to know people. The gym is open to everyone, and people definitely take advantage of that. The IM basketball and dodgeball tournaments are pretty fun and gather a good crowd.

Half of the campus is involved...
Half of the campus is involved with an intramural or club sport. Overall, our varsity teams have good records, and our men's and women's basketballs teams have made it to the playoffs the last several years. Fan attendance has increased markedly in the past few years.

It includes the Gosman Center, which houses a 70,000-square-foot field house, a 200-meter, six-lane indoor track, three indoor tennis courts, nine squash courts (two international), a state-of-the art fencing room, recently refurbished fitness rooms with brand new free weights, nautilus equipment, life cycles, and stair machines, and dance and aerobics rooms. The Shapiro Gymnasium includes practice, training, and workout facilities. The Lindsay Pool was shut down this year due to a lack of funding for maintenance, but will be renovated once the funds are raised. The swim team currently practices at other local college pools.
