Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics may not be Brandeis’s selling point, but they are starting to rise to the point of respectability. The lack of a football or hockey team is a major downside, but it puts the focus on the normally less-popular sports like fencing. Men's and women's basketball are Brandeis' most attended regular season sporting events. However, you will not find much in the way of athletic pride or support at Brandeis. While sports do exist, they are not much of a big deal to the general population and are not a main attraction of the school. It is possible to attend the College and not have much interaction with athletics.

Recently, Brandeis has made great strides in recruiting more and more talented athletes to play for their teams. As the teams continue to improve, so will the school spirit and the outlook on athletics and athleticism at Brandeis. Brandeis offers a wide, if not well publicized, selection, including intramurals. So, if you’re a sports nut (whether it comes to playing or watching) you are sure to find something you enjoy, regardless of the opinions of the rest of the campus.

It's Pretty OK

So we have all the general sports like baseball and soccer and volleyball and such, and the teams are only okay. They don't generally whip up a crowd or following and there is not too much diversity in the way of different sports. Although there is one exception, and that is our Fencing, which is truly awesome to watch. But if those don't rock your boat there are a bunch of club sports that really fill in the gap. Some are serious and some are for fun but they're all great. My favorites are Archery, Hockey, and table tennis.

Division III Is Misleading

Soccer and cross-country boast strong individuals, and would be competitive with many a Division I program. Fencing is strong, too. Overall not a super sports school but athletes are quite competitive.

Athletics at Brandeis

Pretty small, not many people pay attention. When something important happens, like a championship game, people come out to support their friends, but it's not an event people go to unless they know people who participate.

Men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and ultimate Frisbee are the most favored on campus.

Most Overlooked Teams

Fencing and the swim team

School Spirit

When the men’s basketball team made it to the quarterfinals of the Division III NCAA tournament in 2008, there were celebration parties and a free bus to take students to Pennsylvania for the game. Usually though, there is little evidence of school spirit. While you can usually find a rally for Israel, it is rare to see anything in support of Brandeis. Although it is in the same conference as NYU, Washington University, and Emory, Brandeis fails to provide the same sporting experience as any of these schools. A lack of a football team and a general lack of interest in any sports team certainly hurts efforts to excite the student body. But, if the basketball teams continue to do well, then school spirit will slowly but surely improve.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are free, and are not usually required for sporting events at Brandeis—just show your student ID.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Running around the perimeter of the campus, following the Loop road, is a pretty intense workout. There is also a track around Gordon Field. When the weather is bad, there is an indoor track in Gosman.
