College Prowler Take

Almost every student has been at a Brandeis party that has been broken up by the police. The consequences for those types of violations are usually very small, though. The police basically drive around breaking up parties and giving parking tickets—the parking tickets actually help pay for their salary, not the underage fines. So, when they break up parties, they usually aren’t too crazy about prosecuting the people who are involved or responsibe for them.

The thing is not to be stupid about it. If you continually throw parties, they’ll throw you out of housing. If you drink or smoke in public, you’ll get in a lot more trouble than if you do it in the privacy of your own place. My suitemate this year only had a few people over to our suite, but he had the shades and windows open. They were also really loud, and they were all drinking. Thus, they got written up. His punishment was light probation, which doesn’t show up on his record. So, overall, they are pretty lenient here.

It's not strict, but the campus police do get bored because there is nothing to do on campus, so they will break up parties for fun.

The campus has a constant "war on drugs." I will admit that they are fair in dealing with the situations, but they also seek them out at every opportunity because there is no serious crime here to deal with. If the campus was less controlling and invasive, students would be much happier.

Don't get caught with a bag over your smoke detector-that's the only problem because it endangers others. Still, you'll only get a fine for that. The police would rather turn a blind eye to intoxication unless it comes to destruction of property or a noise complaint, in which case they'll still go pretty easy on you. I've never heard of anyone losing housing, except for violent offenses.

I've had friends who have been busted. Usually, they just make you go to a seminar about drugs and alcohol, or sometimes, in extreme cases, you do some community service around campus. Frankly, the police are stricter about parking. It's usually a CA doing the busting.

The Brandeis police break up parties if they occur after quiet hours. However, if you are smart and discrete, you can get away with drinking very, very easily.
