Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Over the past several years, the administration has been working hard to improve Brandeis' diversity, and it seems their efforts are paying off. While the University is still predominately Jewish, the non-Jewish population is rapidly expanding, and different groups are certainly making themselves heard. Brandeis is also a huge supporter of international students, especially at a graduate level, so more and more countries are represented on campus every year.

Overall, statistics show that Brandeis is a lot more diverse than most people think. The school has a decent percentage of minority students that is increasing. Brandeis enrolls students from almost every state and many foreign countries every year. It is possible meet so many people of different backgrounds during freshman year that you can’t help but feel that Brandeis is diverse.

Brandeis Diversity

You make your own experience at Brandeis. I grew up in an affluent Jewish suburb and knew that I wanted a more diverse group of friends in college and find this at Brandeis was not difficult.

If you want the typical Jewish experience, it is there for the taking (and quite a few people, including some of my closest friends took this route). If you only want to hang out with internationals, that's also doable. I can't say enough good things about the students from the Posse Program and the TYP Program.

My best friends were Jewish, Catholic, scattered across the socio-economic spectrum, from Latin America and Asia.

As Diverse as It Gets

One of the huge deciding factors for me in choosing Brandeis was its diverse student body. Many schools will brag about the statistics of the percentages of different racial and ethnic minorities, yet the students will self segregate themselves. Brandeis is extremely special in that all of these different types of people are extremely close knit. Students of all colors are very accepting of each other, along with warm and welcoming.

Asians and Whities Galore

You're going to see many Chinese international students and Jews. This doesn't mean the school isn't working to create a more diverse student body- decent scholarships and the POSSE program lure more diverse students in. Besides that, a greater amount of international students from various other countries continue to pour into the school.

Facts

Gay Pride

The Brandeis gay community is very strong and very present. Gay students have the support of nearly all of the campus and are completely out and very accepted by most people. The Queer Resource Center, Triskelion, and Student Sexuality and Information Services are all dedicated to helping students with issues about their sexuality and constantly host speakers who talk about sexual identity. It is a very comfortable place for people who choose to come out. The gay community also throws some of the best parties at Brandeis.

Political Activity

One of the founding pillars of Brandeis is a commitment to social justice, and the student body takes that to heart. Brandeis is undeniably liberal and undeniably active in terms of politics. During the McCain-Obama presidential campaign, there was no visible showing of support for McCain, but Obama’s popularity was overwhelming. Students stage protests when they are unhappy with the administration, hold rallies, attend war vigils, and always ask others to sign petitions or give to charity. There is a small but vocal conservative group on campus.

Economic Status

While it may seem at times as though everyone at Brandeis is wealthy, a closer look reveals that there actually is a great amount of economic diversity among the student body, thanks in part to Brandeis’ generous financial aid packages. All socio-economic statuses are represented at Brandeis.

Most Common Religions

Depending on whom you talk to, they will either play up or play down Brandeis' Judaism, but it is an undeniable aspect of the school. The student body is about 50 percent Jewish, with 17 other religions represented on campus. While many students are culturally rather than religiously Jewish, there is a strong orthodox presence. There is a lull in activity every Friday night while students are in services. Christian and Muslim groups do manage to have a voice on campus, even if they are not as well funded as Jewish groups.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Minorities have been making a lot of noise at Brandeis recently. The ICC (Intercultural Center) is the head of this group. But the BBSO (Brandeis Black Students Organization) and other Asian and Indian groups also pull great weight on campus.
