Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
Over the past several years, the administration has been working hard to improve Brandeis' diversity, and it seems their efforts are paying off. While the University is still predominately Jewish, the non-Jewish population is rapidly expanding, and different groups are certainly making themselves heard. Brandeis is also a huge supporter of international students, especially at a graduate level, so more and more countries are represented on campus every year. Overall, statistics show that Brandeis is a lot more diverse than most people think. The school has a decent percentage of minority students, and Brandeis enrolls representatives from almost every state and many foreign countries every year. Students can meet so many people of different backgrounds during their freshman year that they can’t help but feel that Brandeis is diverse. It may not be a black-and-white issue, but you might have a roommate who is gay and from San Francisco, and across the hall, you may find a Hispanic girl from Rhode Island, a Christian girl from Massachusetts, or a Jewish girl from Israel. Yet, it is not unfathomable for people to look around Brandeis and see nothing but white, preppy Jewish students.

For the most part, the campus is...
For the most part, the campus is liberal, white, and Jewish. There are a few minorities, but you don't really notice them. The campus is split probably 50/50 in terms of kids coming from wealthy families or poorer families. A ton of people receive financial aid.

Brandeis is not a very diverse...
Brandeis is not a very diverse campus. There are a bunch of international students, but they are all rich and hang out with one another, making them the "international" group. For the most part, this campus is pretty white and middle-class, although you do see more black students on campus these days.

Economically, there is some...
Economically, there is some diversity, but it's mostly middle- to upper-middle class. Ethnically, 45 percent are Jewish, the next largest is probably white, with Asian being a close third. There are also a lot of international students. Ideologically, Brandeis is a left-leaning, social justice kind of campus, but there is some variety. There is a very large gay population, and generally, the campus is sexually progressive. We have an excellent student sexuality information services that provides education and support, as well as products.

It's mostly middle-class...
It's mostly middle-class suburbanites raised with a commitment to diversity and intellectualism. Of course, this is no substitute for real intellectual diversity. You're going to find a lot of people with similar life stories, who may or may not fully understand what it means to be poor, a minority, or even a Republican.

We have a huge Jewish population,...
We have a huge Jewish population, which can make it sort of homogeneous, but there is a diverse range of opinions and ideas on campus. There are tons of clubs and activities committed to all ideologies, backgrounds, lifestyles, and political leanings.

FactsEconomic Status
While it may seem at times as though everyone at Brandeis is wealthy, a closer look reveals that there actually is a great amount of economic diversity among the student body, thanks in part to Brandeis’ generous financial aid packages. All socio-economic statuses are represented at Brandeis.
Gay Pride
The Brandeis gay community is very strong and very present. Gay students have the support of nearly all of the campus and are completely out and very accepted by most people. The Queer Resource Center, Triskelion, and Student Sexuality and Information Services are all dedicated to helping students with issues about their sexuality and constantly host speakers who talk about sexual identity. It is a very comfortable place for people who choose to come out. The gay community also throws some of the best parties at Brandeis.
Minority Clubs
Minorities have been making a lot of noise at Brandeis recently. The ICC (Intercultural Center) is the head of this group. But the BBSO (Brandeis Black Students Organization) and other Asian and Indian groups also pull great weight on campus.
Most Common Religions
Depending on whom you talk to, they will either play up or play down Brandeis' Judaism, but it is an undeniable aspect of the school. The student body is about 50 percent Jewish, with 17 other religions represented on campus. While many students are culturally rather than religiously Jewish, there is a strong orthodox presence. There is a lull in activity every Friday night while students are in services. Christian and Muslim groups do manage to have a voice on campus, even if they are not as well funded as Jewish groups.
Political Activity
One of the founding pillars of Brandeis is a commitment to social justice, and the student body takes that to heart. Brandeis is undeniably liberal and undeniably active in terms of political activism. During the McCain-Obama presidential campaign, there was no visible showing of support for McCain, but Obama’s popularity was overwhelming. Students stage protests when they are unhappy with the administration, hold rallies, attend war vigils, and always asking others to sign petitions or give to charity. There is a small but vocal conservative group on campus.
