Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The most common advice given when it comes to dating at Brandeis is to lower your standards. Brandeis is a school that prides itself on its unique yet awkward student body. Attractive people and potential partners do exist at Brandeis, but there are very few. Relationships at Brandeis tend to last a long time, so there is not even the hope that attractive couples will break up, which leaves a lot of rather strange and average-looking people without a partner.

Brandeis students range from being very open in their sex life to not being able to even touch members of the opposite sex for religious reasons. Student Sexuality and Information Services supplies condoms, lube, and other sex related products to students at a heavily discounted price. They have quite a presence on campus. Most students complain about the guys and girls at Brandeis because they look at schools like the University of Indiana or the University of Miami and are disappointed in the comparison to Brandeis.

Guys & Girls Are Hideous and Socially Inept

Honestly the ugliest group of people I have ever seen in my life. It's like the actively recruited hideous, unfortunte-looking kids (girls especially). These were all the freaks in high school who never got laid, got bullied and were made fun of. It's okay to be different but the majority of Brandeis students go the extra mile to be weird. They refuse to listen to any relatively normal music outside of the dorms and pride themselves on being freaks. The worst part is the students (frat members especially) see this as their time to be "cool" to make up for how pathetic they were in high school. An unattractive male will be able to get with lots of unattractive females and he thinks he's "cool." Overall, most students are very socially awkward and can't hold a conversation on a normal topic. There is almost no social life outside of the frats and sororities (as pathetic as they may be). The only people who really enjoy Brandeis are those who do not find joy in the real world.

Nerdy Girls Are Cute

Brandeis is known for being a nerdy school, and its students reflect this assertion. While there are a decent amount of guys who are athletic and fairly attractive, there are just as many who could be described as awkward and possibly lanky. The girls follow this same trend - while there are some who could be called hot by traditional standards, many fall a bit more on the nerdy side. To be fair, the majority of them look pretty good, and I personally find nerdy girls cute.

Friendly or Introverted

At Brandeis, I've found either people are really outgoing and friendly or shy and a little awkward. As for looks and dress, people aren't very showy and are comfortable with whatever they wear. There is always stuff to do on campus, either school sponsored or organized by clubs. There are parties at the frats almost every weekend, and it's easy to get into Boston on the weekends.

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Although Brandeis students may claim not to have fun, they are still social. It is a very friendly campus. Of course, there is a small number of people who stick to themselves. However, Brandeis students are very friendly and enjoy hanging out together. It is not unusual to see big groups of Brandeis students wherever you go off campus.

Hookups or Relationships?

It sometimes seems that every student at Brandeis is in a serious relationship that started sometime during freshman year. There is a hookup culture, particularly among freshmen and the off-campus frats. The problem is that campus is very smal, so not only will the gossip of a hookup spread like wild fire, there is a guarantee of a future awkward interaction with that person.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Lots of relationships at Brandeis start because of simple proximity. "Floorcest" is a very common phenomenon, especially during freshman and sophomore years before people are living alone with their friends in suites. As with any school, parties are the ultimate place to meet people. It is also not a terrible idea to have friends set you up with their friends, since the small campus size means you would have met them sooner or later anyway. Classes are very intense and don’t offer many options for socializing, but clubs or extracurricular activities, where people spend most of their time and effort, are another great option.

Dress Code

Because of the large religious population at Brandeis, many people dress a little more conservatively than what would be expected at a comparable non-religious school. One can clearly pick out Orthodox girls who refuse to show any skin on even the hottest days. Also, the most popular accessory for a guy is a yarmulke. However, the style is pretty generic and average.
