Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In New England there's a common saying: "Don't like the weather? Wait a few minutes. It'll change." It’s all too common to have freezing temperatures one morning, then have a beautiful 60 degree afternoon the following day. When students first move in at the end of August, they often wonder why they didn’t bring more summer clothes. Then, about two weeks into September, the leaves start falling and the sweatshirts come out. The scenery is beautiful, and everything seems nice. Then in November, it starts to get cold—and that’s when the snow usually comes in. In Boston, students soon learn that Chapstick, hot cocoa, instant noodles, and hand lotion are just as essential to bearing the winter as gloves, tassle hats, and scarves.

Around March, the weather finally starts to warm up. After the snow stops, the rain begins. Brandeis has horrible drainage problems, so rain boots are a must. Around mid-April it finally starts to get warm—New England springs are quite beautiful. During these months, the “Great Lawn” outside of the Shapiro Campus Center is filled with people who are playing Frisbee, sunbathing, and enjoying themselves. Some professors even choose to move their classes outdoors on these exceptionally nice days. Everyone’s self-esteem gets a big boost around this time of year—and the sheer joy lasts all the way until it is time for finals.

Weather Sucks

Rains A LOT. At least every other week. Floods in spring and fall. Snows a bit in winter.

Harsh Winter

There is usually a good deal of snow, and classes are rarely cancelled. THey do a pretty good job of cleaning up and getting the campus safe, but it can be hard to get to your class at times. But the fall and spring can be beautiful.

Not Bad

I'm from Cali, and I found it extremely tolerable here. During my first semester, I rarely saw it dip below 30. In fact for the majority of the time, it was in the 50s and 60s. Even when it was raining it wasn't so bad and I had an easy time getting to class.
