College Prowler Take

New England weather should be a subject studied by psychologists. In many cases, it can cause manic depression—when it’s really cold and nasty outside, and the last thing you want to do is step out of your heated dorm room. New England weather patterns also suffer from schizophrenia. It’s all too common to have freezing temperatures one morning, then have a beautiful 60 degree afternoon by two o’ clock the following day. When students first move in at the end of August, they often wonder why they didn’t bring more summer clothes. Then, about two weeks into September, the leaves start falling and the sweatshirts come out. The scenery is beautiful, and everything seems nice. Then, in November, it starts to get cold—and that’s when the snow usually comes in. In Boston, students soon learn that Chapstick, hot cocoa, instant noodles, and hand lotion are just as essential in bearing the winter as gloves, tassle hats, and scarves.

Around March, the weather finally starts to warm up, but you must be careful because there is always the chance of an unexpected blizzard. After the snow stops, the rain begins. Brandeis has horrible drainage problems, so rain boots are a must. Around mid-April it finally starts to get warm—New England springs are quite beautiful. During these months, the “Great Lawn” outside of the Shapiro Campus Center is filled with people who are playing Frisbee, sunbathing, and enjoying themselves. Everyone’s self-esteem gets a big boost around this time of year—and the sheer joy lasts all the way until it is time for finals.

It is very cold from mid-November to mid-March. You should expect that, and bring lots of warm clothes. It is hot for the first 2 to 4 weeks of school, so bring shorts and a big fan for your dorm room.
