Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In general, the students at BYU-Idaho view the campus strictness as a good thing. The University does have a strict set of rules called the Honor Code that students commit to follow when they apply to the school. The Code includes specific standards that commit students to keep a professional appearance, refrain from drinking or drugs, abstain from sexual intimacy before marriage, implement healthy lifelong habits, increase student safety and personal integrity, and strengthen spirituality. The Honor Code isn’t a list of standards that all church members have to abide by to be good or even exceptional Mormons. Members can have a beard and still be admitted inside the temple. They can wear flip-flops during the week and still give a talk on Sunday. They can stay up past midnight and still serve well in their church callings.

However, the Honor Code is instead a set of University rules for students and faculty to keep the campus unified in spirit. By maintaining obedience in respecting campus as a learning environment dedicated to God, students are able to contribute and influence quality learning through the Spirit. If an applicant or current student can't commit to live by the rules established as the University’s Honor Code, administration will ultimately suggest that they need to find another university.

The Honor Code Is Always Under Pressure

the honor code includes dress and behavior standards and many students find in confining and ridiculous. The point is, obey the honor code if you wish to attend. If you're going to cry about it then you don't want to be here bad enough.

Worth It

As long as you are willing to: live without wearing shorts, not having a goatee or beard, having facial jewelry, not using foul language, and not having suggestive, inappropriate or revealing clothing=the strictness is about the same of any other university. The honor code is strictly enforced, but you it’s up to you to live it. As long as you don’t cheat and are respectful, you’ll be fine.

Visitation Policies

Students have to let their housing manager know when they have a visitor staying overnight. Visitors have to be the same sex as the student because all housing is divided respectively into young men and young women housing.

Did You Know?
  • For the most part, students are held accountable for maintaining the standards of the Honor Code for themselves, by themselves, and for those around them. There is no Honor Code patrol. Some teachers won't ask you to leave class if you have a hole in your jeans, and housing complexes no longer have RAs that come through and make sure everyone is home before curfew. You personally have to make the choice to live the honor code and then do it.
  • However, with more serious aspects of the Code, the University has almost no tolerance and will not permit students to continue at the school if they exhibit actions like cheating, immorality, or doing drugs.
