Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking is a sore topic for many students. There are not as many parking lots or even parking spaces for the number of students owning cars. The parking lots that are available are primarily on only one side of campus, so if students do drive, they’ll still end up walking across campus to get to class.

That being said, BYU-Idaho is a small campus. Students can cross from one side to the other in about 15 minutes on average by walking. Most housing complexes are only one to two streets away from the campus, if not just across the street. Even community housing for married students and students with a family is within a reasonable walking distance. There are still students who do have to travel a couple of miles to get to campus, either because they live in a nearby city or at a local residence outside the main parts of town—these students are who the parking is intended for. For most students, walking is less of a hassle, and they don’t mind having to walk when they know they’ll eventually end up walking across campus anyway.

Parking at BYUI

There are not a lot of close parking spots for students. It is also confusing trying to decide what parking pass to purchase because you have to coordinate classes, buildings, times and places.

Getting a Parking Permit

It is easy to get a parking permit. You just have to visit the parking office in the Kimball and request one. The cost is $10. There is also city parking on the streets surrounding campus that you have to get through the city at the City Administration Building. The cost is $15 for three months, $30 for the year.

Did You Know? University Relations has recently promoted walking on campus and increased public knowledge of the new parking regulations. At the beginning of the fall 2009 semester, the parking policies were adjusted to include city and campus parking, designated by U and B parking. For many students, this has created unnecessary confusion, but overall, the University believes it has created more order for students who have to drive to school and encouraged more students that can walk to walk.
