Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

BYU has top-caliber professors. There is no question that academics at BYU are important, and the administration strives to hire excellent teachers. It is not unusual to come across a professor that is a BYU alumnus. Most professors portray the impression that they have an investment in the success of their students and strive to be available to help students whenever possible. Professors’ teaching styles
do vary, and “shopping around” for a professor is not a bad idea.

The biggest complaint, especially in freshman classes,
is the enormous class size. However, there are always teaching assistants available, and the number of TAs usually compensates for the large class size. In other words, there is always help available; sometimes you just have to look harder for it. One way to avoid the large classes as an incoming freshman is to go the “freshman academy” route. This is a program where you take all your generals in smaller classes with the same kids. You also live with these same kids, however, so it can be stifling.

Administration Really Cares About You

The administration and professors really care about our success. They help look for opportunities for the students and find ways to succeed. The work load is not easy, and there are not "freebies" but the opportunities to do well are available. On-campus jobs allow for students to make an income while going to school. Classes are challenging yet fair.

Always Helpful

I have not had much experience in my college, the McKay School of Education, but so far I am impressed! There was a day around registration that I was trying to figure out how to apply for a class. When I went to the main office, the workers knew exactly how to help me and I was able to get into the class!

The only hard thing with this major is that people call it the "mommy major." If you decide to go into education, be ready for your fellow students to roll their eyes!

Applies What We Learn to Life!

I knew that BYU was a prestigious school, but I was not expecting it to stretch me and challenge me as it did. After only a year, I have learned to think for myself and question before I blindly accept what I learn. The majority of the professors I had were interested more in how I apply the knowledge, rather than making me memorize facts. They care that you remember something from their class and that they make an impact on your life. The education you gain at BYU is more than just knowledge, it is applied wisdom!
