College Prowler Take
BYU has top-caliber professors. There is no question that academics at BYU are important, and the administration strives to hire excellent teachers. It is not unusual to come across a professor that is a BYU alumnus. Most professors portray the impression that they have an investment in the success of their students and strive to be available to help students whenever possible. Professors’ teaching styles do vary, and “shopping around” for a professor is not a bad idea. The biggest complaint, especially in freshman classes, is the enormous class size. However, there are always teaching assistants available, and the number of TAs usually compensates for the large class size. In other words, there is always help available; sometimes you just have to look harder for it. One way to avoid the large classes as an incoming freshman is to go the “freshman academy” route. This is a program where you take all your generals in smaller classes with the same kids. You also live with these same kids, however, so it can be stifling.

Brigham Young has great teachers...
Brigham Young has great teachers that really seem to care about all their students, but class sizes are huge! |

My professors have, for the most...
My professors have, for the most part, always been interesting, especially in the humanities, art history, and Spanish departments. Most professors make an effort to make things interesting for the students, and they also have decent office hours. I have had a lot of experience with teachers outside the classroom, and they have been quite helpful. Most of the professors really want to be there, and they want to see the students succeed. |

The vast majority of my teachers...
The vast majority of my teachers have been exceptional. One or two, here or there, exhibited some flaws, like an excessive attachment to bland homework projects or slightly boring lectures, but I have found that, overall, my teachers are good friends. In particular, their lectures tend to reach beyond informational and educational, to exhibit an inspirational quality that develops a greater love and appreciation for the topic. This might sound like inflated praise, but most of my professors and classes at BYU have been superior. Most professors, as well as being passionate about their teaching material, are also approachable, friendly, and very willing to meet with students to discuss concerns, ideas, and future plans. |

Most of the professors at BYU are extremely good. They really know their stuff and are very anxious to help the students get it, too. The majority of professors at BYU are dynamic, engaging, and appreciative of student feedback, all of which make for excellent classes. This is not to say, however, that all the professors at BYU are wonderful; some are actually quite ridiculous. |

I have never come across a bad teacher since I’ve been here. They are all intelligent, fun, flexible, and concerned with your progress in their class. |
