College Prowler Take

The cafeteria food is not generally regarded as being amazing cuisine. But the glory of BYU meal options is that you don’t have to live on cafeteria food alone! BYU offers a couple of different meal plan options; the most popular (and slightly more expensive) option is Dining Plus. This option gives students a daily allowance that they can spend where they like on campus. It’s great if you don’t want to trudge back to the cafeteria for lunch, you can easily grab something on campus at the Cougareat or one of the cafés.

On-campus dining should be enjoyed while on Dining Plus freshman year, because you quickly realize later that without Dining Plus, eating on campus can get really expensive, really quickly. The food is pretty good—nothing spectacular, but nothing revolting. There are not a lot of low-fat options readily available, so beware of the Freshman 15. Everything is really convenient, and location is exceptional, so using the dining plan freshman year is highly recommended.

The Cougareat is where most people go for lunch—it’s just like a food court. The Museum Cafe, Marketplace Cafe in the Tanner Building, and Pendulum Court are a step up. The Skyroom is the best place that you can eat on campus. The prices range from cheap to expensive, and the quality of the food you get is reflective of the price.

Food is good on campus, and even the dining halls are much better than they used to be. There is a food court with Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Subway, Chinese, Italian, and a salad place. There are also vending machines all over the place. The best places to eat are the Museum Cafe and the Skyroom, which are a little more expensive, but more like a restaurant setting.

The dining halls on campus are...

The dining halls on campus are almost entirely frequented by the freshman set, and although dining services gets credit for trying, ‘cafeteria’ and ‘food’ are two very mutually-exclusive terms. The food at the student center is much more tolerable, and places like Taco Bell express and Subway are easy on the college budget, which is a major plus. Jamba Juice is a personal favorite, and if you have money to burn, The Skyroom and the MOA Cafe are sure bets.

The cafeterias are excellent. They’re a great place to pick up guys, too! There is also the Cannon Center (by Helaman Halls) and the Morris Center, and then there’s the Cougareat by the BYU Bookstore in the Wilkinson Center.

On-campus food isn’t that bad, actually. The dorm food isn’t quite as good as mom’s home cooking, but it’s definitely better than high school food. There are a few other food places on campus, most notably the Cougareat, which is a food court in the student center with a bunch of fast food restaurants and such. There is even an on-campus restaurant called the Skyroom, and I’ve heard it’s quite nice!

Students who live off campus can buy a meal plan. It is good at all eateries on campus, and it’s a nice alternative to packing a lunch everyday.
