College Prowler Take

BYU on-campus housing has mostly a freshman population—very few upperclassmen live on campus. Be sure to research the dorms and sign up early; the three complexes vary widely, and depending on what you are looking for, one may be preferable over the others. Even if you don’t have a preference, early sign-up is recommended since the dorms will fill up completely, usually by early April.

While some of the dorms may be old, they are clean and well-maintained. They are small and don’t offer much in the way of amenities. Deseret Towers does require using communal bathrooms. Heritage Halls gives you more of an apartment-like experience. All of the dorms have the same strict rules, and there is no getting around them. The opposite sex is only allowed in your room during visiting hours once a week, and the door must remain open. The lobbies close before midnight each night and are patrolled thereafter. However, this is more a safety measure than a Big Brother-type of thing. The dorms are very safe, so Mom and Dad won’t have to worry about you during your first year.

All the dorms are fine if you aren’t a pansy. I’ve lived in a few, and I liked Helaman Halls more than Deseret Towers simply because it’s newer. They’re all close to campus and they have good dining services if you have money and don’t want to cook. If you like cooking, Heritage Halls is nice because you get a kitchen.

Dorms are fun, but only during your first year. The rules concerning visitors of the opposite sex are very strict, which can be annoying at times, but it doesn’t interfere with our fun—it just makes us more creative. I live in Deseret Towers, which is considered the ghetto dorm, but to be honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way. All of my friends from high school are in Helaman Halls, which are the nice new dorms, but I don’t like the atmosphere there. It is too much like high school and too snobbish for me. Deseret Towers has variety and seems more real.

All of the girls’ dorms are nice and have been recently remodeled. Some of the guys’ dorms are gross, but they’re working on making them better. The Deseret Towers dorms are all awful, but livable. Heritage Halls are more like apartments. You have your own kitchen and stuff in your room.

Avoid Deseret Towers—they’re old. The Helaman Halls dorms are really nice (they’ve just been remodeled), and I recommend getting a double room with a sink. It’s a very convenient thing to have in your room. All of the rooms have a minifridge, which is also nice to have.

Deseret Towers looks like big...

Deseret Towers looks like big hotels, with several floors in each of them. They have strict rules, which I believe are also the rules that apply to the Helaman dorms. The rules are something along the lines that guys can never be in girls’ rooms, and they can only visit each other on Wednesdays, during which time everyone has to leave their doors open. In Heritage, guys and girls can visit each other whenever, but they have to be out of the dorm by a certain time, and they have stay in the living room or kitchen while they are there. This part of BYU is very different from any other university, but if you believe that it’s a good thing, it won’t bother you. It’s the only way you’ll get your homework done at night!
