There is stuff to do, but it sometimes takes a care to get there or a little too much money. Most of the time hanging out with friends can be great without going places just because of the beautiful mountains and the great job that grounds does. During the winter, the inversion browns the atmosphere. If you have the money to ski or snowboard, there are plenty of places close by to do that (only costs 40-50 bucks at the closest for a 4 hour run at night). The arts, theater and dance departments keep things happening on campus also, so you don't have to go elsewhere for that type of entertainment.
