  • DTR: "Define the relationship." When a couple sits down and talks about the state of their relationship and their plans for the future.
  • Mrs. Major: A female BYU student who is only at BYU to get her "Mrs. Degree" (i.e., find a husband).
  • NCMO: Non-committal makeout.
  • Sweet Bro/Provo All-Star: A male BYU student who is obsessed with BYU sports, working out, and hooking up. He usually does summer sales and typically has a lot of money.
  • Zoobie: A hardcore BYU sports fan.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Even if you live off campus, there are still strict housing rules to abide by.
  • First semester of freshman year is a great time to take lots of GEs and really see what interests you.
  • If you want to save money on books, buy them early, and buy them used.
  • Sign up for housing early
  • The Career Center offers a one-credit “pick a major” class for freshmen. It’s a good way to orient yourself to college.
  • The Mormon culture is very much alive and a big part of BYU.
  • Use ratemyprofessor.com; BYU is very active on this Web site and rates its professors pretty accurately.
Tips to Succeed
  • Commit yourself to your studies, but be sure to find time to enjoy the myriad of fun things that BYU offers as well. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy, on any budget.
  • Don’t be afraid to approach professors. They have office hours for a reason. If you have a question, ask!
  • Don’t forget to take time to appreciate where you are. School can be stressful, but enjoy it while it lasts!
  • Don't get hung up on Mormon politics.
  • Get involved in campus clubs and activities—this is your best chance for a social life at BYU.
  • Take a variety of classes from different fields and professors, and begin and maintain close relationships with professors.
  • Use the TAs, especially in your large classes. When they hold a review session, go! They work closely with the professor and have probably seen the exam.

Good Environment to Be Yourself

You're really allowed to learn and do whatever you want to be the most successful you can be. The university is constantly focusing its resources towards creating a better experience for the students. The only issue I've come across is that it's difficult to find guidance on careers that combine several interests groups. For example, I want to be a psychiatrist. Guidance on medical school is plentiful but on a psychological interest is nearly nonexistent.

Everyone loves everyone and everyone is welcome. Guys are super hottttt! Dating is BIG here:) And fun too. Lots of fun stuff always hapeening. SUCH an amazing fun spirit.

Sober Campus

BYU is a dry campus and i actually really love that. It gives mem more time to focus on my studies and i can always make it to class. There is no one here that is high or drunk all the time so there are no crazy distractions. Everyone here came here to work and study and get a good education and i love that. It makes the atmosphere on campus great and the social life is fun because you can still remember it the next day!

Traditions
  • 100 Hour Board: BYU has a 100 Hour Board, a website that takes student questions and answers them within one hundred hours. It’s located at theboard.byu.edu.
  • Blue and White Week: Blue and White Week is held every year during the week of the BYU versus U of U football game. BYUSA sponsors student activities involving BYU spirit every day of the week, including a homecoming dance.
  • BYU/University of Utah Food Drive: BYU and the U of U host a canned food drive every year, where the students compete to gather the most items of canned food for charity.
  • First Kiss: When you kiss someone for the first time, BYU tradition says that you have to buy your roommates ice cream. Similarly, when you hold hands with someone for the first time, you owe them M&Ms.
  • Tunnel Singing: Every Sunday, groups of students go “tunnel singing,” where they sing hymns in the tunnels near the Marriott Center.
Urban Legends
  • BYU has hoards of food stored for students in case of an emergency.
  • BYU is building a parking garage (this can also be varied by saying that the Honor Code is changing, tank tops will be allowed . . . It’s never going to happen!).
  • The fourth floor of the library is haunted. A chair in the Harp Room appeared out of nowhere one day, and no one knows where it came from.
  • There are dinosaur bones buried under the football stadium. BYU stores them there because they didn’t have anywhere else to put them.
  • There are tunnels that connect BYU's campus to the LDS church headquarters in Salt Lake City.
  • There is a urinal in one of the women's restrooms in the Clyde building.
  • You get a tuition refund if you graduate unmarried.
