A BYU experience is unlike anything else. The things that you will learn go far beyond what is taught in the classrooms, and the people that you will meet are exceptional. Researching the school, and being familiar with the rules and expectations of students, will make the transition smoother and help you get the most out of your BYU experience.
Talking with people who have attended, reading books such as this one, and looking at the BYU Web site (www.byu.edu) are all great ways to make sure that this is really the school for you. If you decide that BYU is what you want, then jump in and enjoy it! You are in for a great and character-building experience.
BYU is infamous for its strict honor code. While I think that it is a great thing that really helps the students to be professional and not get involved with things that can become addictive and destroy your life, I think it can be a little too strict. For instance, my roommate wanted to work out at the gym right after taking a test, so she wore leggings to the testing center and they wouldn't let her in. That's a little extreme in my opinion, but for the most part it's great. I haven't had much experience with BYU police so there isn't much I can say about that.
It's nice because there is a lot of housing close to campus, so for people like myself who don't own a car, walking to school is a breeze. There are buses that go all over and aren't too expensive, especially with the student discount. The new frontrunner train that runs from Ogden to Provo is awesome and it's close enough that I can ride my bike to the station.
While Provo is a small town, there is always something to do here. There's always something going on in the city and in addition, we are surrounded by countless outdoor opportunities. The area is incredibly gorgeous and offers the most beautiful sunsets which can easily be viewed high up on a mountain. The locals love us BYU students.
The student body at BYU is pretty diverse, aside from the fact that the majority of the students are LDS. We all have our own interests yet we all get along pretty well. We all share the same values which is really convenient in the social scene. I love all the people I meet here and thoroughly enjoy being a student at BYU. I'd love to have more international students here though!
There is an honor code. But students agree to live by it when they choose to come here, so I dont like it when they complain about it. Parking Police are a beast.
