College Prowler Take
Brown is not an overly athletic school. Almost every student played some varsity sport in high school, but for most students, academics and other extracurricular activities come before athletics. However, there are a full range of varsity sports and less-intense club and intramural sports. Many Brown students go for runs around campus, or they find themselves playing catch or Frisbee on the Main Green. Sports are just one aspect of social life, and they help relieve stress from the academic rigors of the University. Brown has facilities for non-athletes to swim, work out, and play organized sports. Brown also has gifted student athletes who may go underappreciated despite winning records.

The campus at large is fairly...
The campus at large is fairly uninterested in the varsity sports. Our largest intramural program is probably ultimate Frisbee, and as the team travels all over. They are fairly intense.

I'm on the varsity fencing team,...
I'm on the varsity fencing team, which is underfunded compared to other teams but is still pretty well funded. We have access to good facilities and trainers, and we get equipment and warm-ups from the school, as well as per diem for travel. I don't know about intramurals, but I'm also in the Frisbee program, which has an A, B, and C team. It's not very well funded, but we do a lot of our own fundraisers and have a very successful program.

Very few people attend varsity sporting events-our football team won the Ivy League title, but most people still didn't bother going to the games. I don't know anything about intramural sports.

The only thing I don’t like about...
The only thing I don’t like about Brown is the way the athletes are treated here. I’m an athlete, and people only assume I got in because I’m an athlete and I’m in dumb-jock classes. There’s a lot of hostility to athletes here; not from the professors but sometimes from other students. I feel like the athletes do as well in classes, if not better than non-athletes. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Hunter S. Marston Boathouse - The men’s and women’s crew teams house their boats in this waterside facility about two miles from campus. The boathouse, in addition to housing the team’s vessels, has a workshop, a 16-seat rowing tank, and 34 rowing machines.
- Olney-Margolies Athletic Center (The OMAC) - The OMAC is the main gym on campus. It features a 200-meter indoor track, five indoor tennis courts, and many varsity training facilities, as well as IM and club competition grounds.
- Pizzitola Sports Center - The Pizzitola Sports Center provides an intercollegiate competition court for men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics, and has bleachers for 2,800 fans. This center also contains the Washington Weight Room.
- Smith Swim Center - Boasting a long and short course pool, as well as a complete diving well and sauna, the Smith Swim Center is an under-used asset in the Brown athletic complex. In addition to the pool facilities, there are also eight squash/handball courts.

Getting Tickets
Since most varsity athletic events are only moderately attended, it is only hard to get tickets for the biggest games of the year. In most cases, showing up to an event with your Brown ID is all you need to get in. For information, call (401) 863-2773.
Most Popular Sports
The most popular sport on campus, in terms of participation, seems to be ultimate Frisbee. Overall, varsity sports tend to receive rather weak spectatorship.
Most Overlooked Teams
Although the equestrian team is ranked among the best in the nation, it rarely seems to get support or recognition.
Best Place to Take a Walk
For a casual stroll, there’s plenty of exploring to be done just by walking the streets around campus. If you’re up for a workout, a run downtown and back will give you good hill climbing training.
