Advice
- There are a few good ways to get good work around the University. An easy and surefire option is to work for the University Food and Catering Service or the library system, both of which hire students for all shifts and give good hours with decent pay. For a more academic job, most professors hire students as research or administrative assistants, depending on the department. Students can get these by taking classes with the professor and demonstrating genuine interest and ability in the course, as well as developing a relationship with the professor. Brown has the typical support to aid students looking for jobs and internships. The place to start is the Career Services Center, which offers a full range of resources to students. They have a library with walls of books for researching internships, grants, programs, and job opportunities. The staff reviews and edits résumés and cover letters and they perform mock interviews. Others include the dossier service, which keeps recommendations on file for students and a Web site that lists jobs and internships. In the end, however, most students use Career Services sparingly and have limited results actually finding jobs through the network. Going to career services, however, can be a great way to get motivated or receive specific advice about cover letters or résumés.
