Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

According to the rumors, the headshots Brown requires with every application are meant to ensure Brown’s reputation for having the most attractive Ivy League students. Whether or not you believe this rumor is entirely a matter of taste (and whether you consider “attractive Ivy League student” an oxymoron). In general, students tend to agree that the admissions office does a fabulous job choosing interesting and enjoyable classmates, but they are a little more critical when it comes to sharing anything more than intellectual curiosity with their peers. However, the truth of the matter is that the Brown student body is no more or less attractive than any other population of 20-year-old students; observers are just as likely to rave about the spectacular beauties lounging on the Main Green as they are to complain about the pale, four-eyed creatures that wander out of the library late at night.

The only real consensus is on the state of the dating scene: There isn’t one. Students chose between serial relationships, random hookups, or celibacy. While this is a common complaint on Friday nights, the system is probably perpetuated because it suits the busy Brown lifestyle.

Very Laid Back

Everything is acceptable at Brown. The social life is vibrant but doesn't revolve around Greek Life that much. There is a VERY large LGBTQ prescence and theres a lot about embracing your sexuality. People work hard but also are super laid back and not overly incredible.

Girls at Brown

The female students at Brown are intelligent but not the most attractive. It is hard to have a conversation that doesn't mostly involve them talking about school or how stressed they are.

Facts

Social Scene

Brown students generally can be put into two groups: social butterflies and social caterpillars. It makes for a great dynamic. Just when you think you've exhausted your social sphere, you meet someone in a class who, it turns out, lived down the hall from you for two years but never left their room. That being said, freshmen housing units are the basis for future social interaction at Brown. In freshmen units, personalities spill into the hallways and start friendships that may last a lifetime. At Brown, a smile really is all it takes to meet people.

Hookups or Relationships?

Very few students seem to carry deep, long-term relationships, but a good number of them do exist. However, Brown is a school where hookups reign supreme. Most students would say they are simply too busy and too involved to pursue a committed relationship. Brown also seems to attract many freshmen with little or no relationship experience. It's impossible to say what combination of factors lead to the two most common sentiments about Brown students and dating: "there is no dating at Brown," and "we're just friends with benefits."

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Students spend most of their time on campus, so the back row of a lecture hall, a small study section, or an all-night study group are all great places to start relationships. The same goes for the libraries and cafés on Thayer Street. The fact that few students leave campus on the weekends means that the students looking for a good time will be concentrated at one of the half-dozen big and easy to find parties on any given night.

Dress Code

The dressing tendencies at Brown tend to be all over the place. The majority of students dress like you would expect any other college students to dress. You will definitely see your share of designer clothing and hip style and fashion here. Particularly in the winter, fashion seems to give way to functionality, but even then, students manage to show off some personal flair. Conversely, a good number of students seem to just throw together whatever isn’t in the laundry. Overall, there is a broad spectrum of dressing, so regardless of your own personal style, chances are you’ll feel comfortable with how you dress.
