Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Providence truly caters to the epicurean diner. One need not stray further than the College Hill and the Downtown areas to find all varieties of ethnic food, dining styles, and atmospheres. Without a doubt, Providence is host to an impressive number of off-campus restaurants that offer variety in terms of price and menus. Vegetarian, kosher, and all other diets can be easily accommodated. Great food is truly one of Providence’s greatest assets.

The scariest thing about off-campus eating, however, is the lack of supermarkets that are easily within walking distance to campus. The closest supermarket is over a mile away, which will sound a lot worse in February when it snows and gets dark before dinner. There are a few specialty markets nearby, including a Saturday farmer's market at Hope High School, but you really need a car if you plan to cook on a regular basis.

You Have to Look...

A lot of the best food in providence is tucked away in an alley, behind another building where you'd least expect it. Also, don't underestimate dining on the west side.

A Lot of Diversity on Thayer Street

There's a pretty good variety of restaurants in walking distance of the campus. There are many, many more that are a 5 minute (free) bus ride away, too.

Food: American
1460 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence
(401) 353-9442

Cuban Revolution Café
Food: Cuban
149 Washington St., Providence
(401) 331-8829
Price: $2–$10
Cool Features: The brilliant cabana atmosphere with live music in the evenings makes eating a pressed Cuban sandwich, fried plantain chips, and flan a welcome treat. Wear camouflage on Saturdays or a Che Guevara print on Mondays for special discounts.

(401) 751-6737

Cool Features: Fellini is ridiculously popular among students, and most agree it's some of the best pizza in New England (though it definitely has its detractors). It's particularly popular around midnight and thereafter on Fridays.

The Garden Grille Café and Juice Bar
Food: Vegetarian and vegan cuisine
727 East Ave., Pawtucket
(401) 726-2826

Haven Brothers
Food: Diner
72 Spruce St. (sort of) Fulton and Dorrance Sts., Providence
(401) 861-7777
Price: $2–$8

Hemenway's Seafood Grill and Oyster Bar
Food: Seafood
121 S. Main St., Providence
(401) 351-8570

Food: Indian and Pakistani
123 Dorrance St., Downtown
(401) 278-2000

(401) 861-1770
