College Prowler Take
Brown students receive an alert by e-mail every time there is a major crime committed on campus or the University perceives a specific safety threat. Recently, in response to a real and perceived increase in crime on and around campus, Brown increased the hours of campus police, hired security officers to patrol at night, and hired a private consulting firm to address the problems. The University tries very hard to inform the students about the status of crimes on campus and provides services to encourage smart and safe movement on campus at night. The shuttle runs on a route all the way around campus and comes about every five minutes until 3 a.m. The escort, who picks up and drops off students from off-campus housing to any location on campus, runs every night from 5 p.m. until 3 a.m. Safe Walk is a student-run volunteer program that provides walking escorts for students every night. Students should feel safe, but not be naïve about the threats that do exist in cities and on College Hill. The campus area has all the common security features. There are many blue-light phones and well-lit public areas, and the police presence is generally strong enough to deter crime. Most students seem to feel very safe on campus and will admit that things like theft happen when doors are carelessly left unlocked or valuables are left in public places. Still, many students choose to leave their laptops unattended in the libraries or never lock their dorm rooms.

I think that there are certain areas off campus that you should avoid when you are walking alone, but on campus, you don’t have to worry about much. |

I don’t think there is a reason to feel unsafe, but at the same time, if you are walking alone on Benefit Street at four in the morning on a Saturday and something happens to you, you cannot blame it on the area. You know the east is safer than any other area of Providence. I’m convinced that the men in yellow coats aren’t doing much of anything. |

I think it’s good that the University uses e-mail to keep us informed about crimes going on around campus, but I think they are a little sensationalist, and they also make it sound worse than [the crime] actually was. In some of the situations I was actually part of the incident, but when I read the e-mails, I knew they made it sound worse than it actually was. It’s no worse than most other urban schools. |
