Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For such a small city, Providence offers a lot of options to travel within the city and to other big cities. If you want to get to New York or Boston via train or bus, you can walk downhill to the station in about 10 minutes. Within the city, trolleys run to major areas of town, and they are cheap and run regularly. There are also a lot of people on campus brave enough to bring cars, so it’s easy to bum rides.

Cheap and reliable, Providence’s RIPTA system will get you everywhere you need without the hassle of having a car. Many Brown students use public transportation infrequently because most missions can be accomplished without having to leave College Hill, but when you need them, a trolley, bus, or train are waiting to carry you away.

Pleasant Walking

The first few weeks of Brown, some kids tend to lose weight due to all the walking. There is literally no way to bring your car to Brown freshman year, and it's extremely difficult after that. There is little to no parking, but everything is within walking distance.

As Brown students, we get free access to RIPTA in case we want to go to the Providence Place Mall or even take a journey to Pawtucket to try out a restaurant or a similar scenario.

Coming from an area in which a car is a necessity, I find the increase in walking relaxing. Very rarely do I miss my car and not enough to deal with the hassle of buying gas and maintaing it, as I have to do back home.

Transportation Ranges from Standard to Substandard

Most people at Brown University walk everywhere. Few people have cars. The transportation system, Ripta, is available for all of Providence and is pretty standard. There is a separate bus service that is able to transport students downtown and back. However, it is difficult getting to and from the airport. In most situations when students need a reliable transportation source to get somewhere, they call the local cab service.

I Have All of Providence at My Fingers!

the Brown ID also doubles as a Providence bus pass... so that's cool- no need to buy bus tickets! there's also SafeRide which is an on campus taxivan for getting from one end of campus to the other. all Brown students with a driver's license can also rent ZipCars for driving around if needed. Overall, if you need to get around campus or the city, Brown has you covered.
