Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In Providence, it seems to rain two out of three days, or it snows a ton. Some days in Providence are absolutely stunning, and if you visit in May, you’ll probably see hundreds of students frolicking on the green. Everyone looks deliriously happy because this is one of the dozen perfect days of the year. Some winters, there are particularly heavy snow falls, which cause the school to close down for a day or two. When it’s not snowing, it can be bitterly cold and depressing as the sun sets before 5 p.m. for a few months in the winter.

But most students adjust to the weather. Rain and snow-resistant clothes are a staple of every student’s wardrobe. Heating in the dorms is fine, but the old houses that students inhabit off campus don’t always have central heating, and gas and electricity bills run high in the cold months. While the weather is nothing to prevent anyone from coming to Brown, it is something that you must be prepared to deal with.

Providence Has Major Mood Swings

It can be pouring rain and windy one day and beautiful, warm, and sunny the next. The first month or two of the fall semester and the last couple months of the spring semester are beautiful, sunny, and warm in general. In between, it swings around a lot, but the coldest it gets is in the 30s. If it snows, it often rains soon there after which really sucks. Occasionally, in February and January the snow lasts a little longer, which, if it's going to snow, is better than slush.

All Over the Place

The weather will go from gorgeous and sunny to snowing within a week. Providence definitely keeps us on our toes. But luckily things aren't terribly far away, and when the weather is nice the campus is extremely lively.

Rainy Providence

Providence = lots of rain. Prepare for rain. But the fall and spring are absolutely beautiful, and the enduring the rain is a small price to pay to be at such a wonderful school!
