College Prowler Take

The Public Safety officers do not need to be strict. Although it does not address drinking directly, the culture of the honor code seems to dissolve the need for extensive policing on the part of Public Safety. Public Safety does not interfere with underage drinking as long as it is done safely and semi-legally, with “21 and over only” signs posted visibly at parties. Bryn Mawr has a party policy that outlines regulations for students when throwing a gathering for more than 30 people. The policy includes mandatory registration and training and outlines the expectations for the hosts, bouncers, and servers for parties serving alcohol. The party policy is a fluid document that has been updated in 2004, 2006, and 2008, with interaction between the offices of Public Safety, Student Activities, Deans, and students themselves.

Mawrters are proud of their honor code and their ability to govern themselves, so the school’s calm policies are very popular with students. Students are sensible, and when they do take advantage of these policies, things rarely get out of hand. Abiding by the honor code is a must, as it is largely responsible for the freedom that students enjoy, as is respecting any limits that Public Safety does set.

Bryn Mawr is very big on letting students govern themselves, so they don’t do much about drugs and drinking. However, in my experience, people tend to be responsible enough about these activities that they won’t bother you. If they do, students normally stop on request.

Drugs aren’t that much of an issue, so I don’t really know about Public Safety’s policy on them. They do not tend to get involved with underage drinking unless students get sick or violent. The Social Honor Code seems to have an unwritten rule that if you’re going to drink and you’re under 21, you’re on your honor to do it responsibly and not get yourself in medical or legal trouble.

You can smoke pot on Taylor steps in broad daylight. Public Safety breaks up parties before the police arrive. They are very lenient.

Bryn Mawr has a wet campus, so those over 21 are allowed to throw wet parties. Public Safety is usually pretty lax, though, and it is easy to feel safe drinking if you are underage on campus.

I once saw the campus police helping a girl with a keg. Another time, a half-empty keg sat in front of the library for a few days. Girls drink, but it is not real loud, obnoxious, or obvious. There are many small, personal parties. Big parties are probably no more than 75 people throughout the course of the night.
