The Public Safety officers do not need to be strict. Although it does not address drinking directly, the culture of the honor code seems to dissolve the need for extensive policing on the part of Public Safety. Public Safety does not interfere with underage drinking as long as it is done safely and semi-legally, with “21 and over only” signs posted visibly at parties. Bryn Mawr has a party policy that outlines regulations for students when throwing a gathering for more than 30 people. The policy includes mandatory registration and training and outlines the expectations for the hosts, bouncers, and servers for parties serving alcohol. The party policy is a fluid document that has been updated in 2004, 2006, and 2008, with interaction between the offices of Public Safety, Student Activities, Deans, and students themselves.
Mawrters are proud of their honor code and their ability to govern themselves, so the school’s calm policies are very popular with students. Students are sensible, and when they do take advantage of these policies, things rarely get out of hand. Abiding by the honor code is a must, as it is largely responsible for the freedom that students enjoy, as is respecting any limits that Public Safety does set.
