Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A look at Bryn Mawr’s diversity statistics reveals a glaring lack of diversity. However, the number of international students seems to make up for this, and many students, although they have a faint realization that diversity could be increased, perceive Bryn Mawr as a diverse campus. They tout students’ diverse interests and the plethora of cultural differences that blend and enhance the campus community. Most students are from middle-class, New England backgrounds. International students come from 63 countries, and many are active in cultural clubs and activities, which form support systems for their members and an education mechanism for the rest of campus. American minority students often form close bonds, but few are cliquish, especially by senior year.

One area where the lack of diversity is apparent is in the realm of political beliefs. Students here who are politically active are overwhelmingly liberal, and students who are not tend to remain silent. Conflicts and alienation are more likely to occur due to differences in economic backgrounds than racial or ethnic differences.

Diverse Community

Acceptance is the policy at BMC--there are religious clubs, LBGT ones, and ethnic clubs. You'll tend to have a mixture of various cultures in the classroom.

Not as Impressed as I Would Have Liked

While Bryn Mawr is exceptionally diverse in regards to ethnic and racial diversity, BMC fails to maintain real socioeconomic diversity which is upsetting. It seems as if diversity here is only skin deep.

Diverse but Still the Same

For the most part, Bryn Mawr is diverse in its religious and ethnic background. However, there was a problem with economic backgrounds and political affiliations in that most people were from the same background in both areas.
